SECOND ANNUAL KEY WEST DULCIMER FEST BRINGS TOGETHER PERFORMERS

AND TEACHERS OF AMERICA'S ONLY NATIVE STRINGED FOLK INSTRUMENT.

People familiar and unfamiliar with the Appalachian mountain dulcimer will have the chance

to hear this uniquely American instrument performed in concert by some of its most notable

players , who will also teach workshops for all skill levels from Beginners to Advanced.

Nationwide, thousands of players and music fans attend dozens of dulcimer festivals every year.

The Key West Dulcimer Fest, taking place January 27th - 30th, 2011, is the first ofthem to

take place in a tropical paradise.

The aim, according to festival founder Bing Futch, is to give devotees of the instrument an

exciting change of venue along with giving folks at the southernmost point of the United

States a chance to hear and play America's only native stringed folk instrument. Created by

European settlers around 250 years ago, the mountain dulcimer has roots in Appalachian culture ,

was brought to the forefront of popular music in the 1950's by Kentucky songstress Jean Ritchie

and was a key element in the 1960's folk explosion, thanks to Mimi and Richard Farina.

Since then, the mountain dulcimer has found its way into many genres and many hands, from

Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page to pop icon Cyndi Lauper,

Also featured at the festival will be the European hammered dulcimer, which has roots that reach

back over 4,000 years. These two extraordinary instruments will be presented in concert and

taught in workshops by eight internationally acclaimed performers and instructors including: Rob

Brereton, Steve Eulberg, Bruce Ford, Bing Futch, Guy George, Sharrie Bulzan, Butch Ross

and Gary Sager.

Other workshops include guitar, steel drums, pennywhistle , ukulele and Native American flute .

Workshop fees are paid to the instructor on an ala carte basis: $15 on the average . Some workshops

may include a materials fee. On Friday and Saturday the teaching staff will present two concerts

that will be open to the public: $10 admission for one night or $15 for both nights . Workshop students

and Key West Food & Wine Festival attendees can show their badges for $5 admission both nights .

Vendors will be on-hand offering a variety of dulcimers and other instruments, books, CDs, music

stands, carrying cases and an on-site "dulcimer doctor" performing repairs . Jam circles will be taking

place all throughout the week as well as open stages for folks to strut their stuff on stage .
