Dear Readers….Something Really Really Wonderful is happening in Key West!  The Waterfront Playhouse opened its big  Musical on March 29 (after having been postponed due to illness the prior week)…. and truly….I was overwhelmed by this amazing production!  The name of the Musical, is SOMETHING ROTTEN…(a line from Hamlet)…. It should be renamed…SOMETHING FABULOUS!!!  Because that is exactly what it is…FABULOUS!

*****”SOMETHING ROTTEN” IS “SOMETHING FABULOUS”! …. This stellar Show  runs through April 16 at the WATERFRONT PLAYHOUSE!!  PLEASE….Run… Don’t walk …. to get tix to this wonderful Musical Production!!  We had the great joy of seeing it on March 29…. and the sold out audience LOVED every single moment!  It gets a hold of your heart right at the very beginning when the Minstrel, played by Xavier McKnight, dances onstage while singing… ‘Welcome to the Renaissance’ ….the curtain opens and suddenly we are taken back to Jolly Olde England… the brilliant set design by Michael Boyer takes your breath away…. And, the performers are all sensationally grand!   Congratulations to director Tom Thayer …. and a perfectly chosen cast!  And what a Cast it is!  Equity Actor, Bruce Moore is back in town to wow you every second he is on stage….He IS the BARD….William Shakespeare, the Rock Star of his Time!  But the fabulous Bottom Brothers, played by the outstanding Brian Robinson (also equity) and Arthur Crocker, are sick of Shakespeare and want to find out what ‘NEW’ type of theater the future holds…. They go to Nostradamus, magnificently performed by Canter O’May, and in song he reveals what  to be prepared for…. MUSICALS!!!!  Every single person in the cast knocks it out of the park all night long.  Shining like the stars they are….ARE…. Alexandra  Zeto, Karl Stahl, Sarah Thorn, Ervin Tumm, John McDonald, Jillian Todd, Barbara Mundy, Belle Jampol, Chris Homberg, Mathias Maloff, Ross Pipkin, J. Michael Wright, Andrew Theede, and the always dynamic Carolyn Cooper who also beautifully Choreographed this Show …plus the aforementioned Bruce, Brian, Canter, Arthur and Xavier.  The Dance Numbers are amazing!
The show is GREAT fun…everyone is in super voice…. the songs are memorable and hummable long after you leave the theater.  The Musical Director is the sensational Michael Fauss and his musicians are all first rate…. ****THE FINALE OF THE 2020 AQUA IDOL FOR THE WATERFRONT PLAYHOUSE!!!!…. On Monday, March 21 2022, at 6 pm we finally got to finish what we started in January of 2020…We held the Grand Finale of The Waterfront Playhouse Aqua Idol.  During the last two years, we really tried to finish this great event, but the Pandemic was not merciful, and we had to cancel our plans twice.   But this time the Gods were with us…..we did it and it was Wonderful!!!!  We had a SRO Audience who were SO Ready for this Show!!!!   Our final five were thrilled to be there and anxious to perform.  Each sang two songs and each knocked-it-out-of-the-park!!!!  At the close of the night, when all the dollars raised by the contestants had been counted…it was time to announce the Winners, and present their prize packages.  #1…JON HERNANDEZ …. #2… BOB WOOD….  #3…STEPHANIE WISE….. #4….BRIA ANSARA…..#5….TREY FORSYTH!   Collectively they raised over $20,000 just that night alone for the Waterfront Playhouse!!!!  Amazing…. our best Finale EVER!!!  Each won fabulous Prize Packages  plus Cash.  It was valued at over $31,000.  Our marvelous guest singers were former Aqua Idol winner, BRUCE MOORE….VICKY ROWDEN…AL ROMANO…. BILL MELCHIOR…. AND JERRY DOWNS…. plus Broadway Legend, TERRI WHITE, and emcee, LAURIE THIBAUD.  Special thanks to Judges TONY KONRATH AND CHRISTOPHER PETERSON…..all the Bucket Passers.  Our Money Counters, BUNNIE SMITH AND FRANK MENDITCH….NICK MAZZA in the sound booth….Michael Ingram & Tyler McNab, all those who contributed to the Prize Packages….the Entire super supportive Audience…. to our Waterfront Board and Staff….  Thanks for helping make this a Night to Remember always!!!!!  I will never forget all who attended and please know how much that meant to me.

DANNY WEATHERS….. When you come to the Waterfront Playhouse, please take notice of the very stunning photograph of our former Artistic Director for 15 years, the late, great DANNY WEATHERS.  Having his wonderful Face there is comforting beyond words.  His memory lives on in all our hearts and minds, and his picture there will be a constant reminder of the legacy he left the Waterfront Playhouse with.  Sincere thanks to Tom Thayer, Christopher Elwell, and the Waterfront Board for making this honor to Danny a reality!

HURRICANE DIANE…We saw this most entertaining and delightful comedy (with a message) and just loved it.  The wonderful actresses in it are ERIN McKENNA, JESSICA MIANO-KRUEL, CAROLINE TAYLOR, SUZANNAH WELLS, and LAUREN THOMPSON.  Each one shines in their roles.  Congrats to Joy Hawkins, director of this super fun show!!!!

MILTON LEE GARRISON… A DEAR FRIEND PASSES….  When we moved to Key West one of the first friends we made was Lee Garrison.  I remember he passed our house one eve walking his dog…He introduced himself, and I remember asking him if he was the owner of The Garrison Bight!  We were friends from that moment on.  He was a true Southern Gentleman…. great fun…full of life and joy… a superb shag dancer… and we shared 20+ years of memories with him….terrific parties….events…sharing confidences and a true friendship.  One cherished memory was going to Ireland with Lee about 10 years ago….. Fiona Molloy led this tour and sharing it with Lee, Billy Cartledge, Jim Hall and eight others was sublime.  We even celebrated Palm Sunday with Fiona’s family in this quaint and adorable Irish Village.  Lee moved from Key West a couple of years ago, back to his main home in Charlotte, NC.    Sadly, he passed away on April 1.  You can send messages of sympathy to his son, Shaw Garrison …. at 441-106 Six Forks Rd.   #377   Raleigh, NC  27609.  I want to thank Billy Cartledge for helping make Lee’s final days special for him.  They were the dearest of friends…. always there for each other.    What great fun and mischief those two rascals shared as Friends!   For Lee’s  obituary go to: https://www.legacy.com/us/obituaries/charlotte/name/milton-garrison-obituary?id=34006221.  Lee was a kind and gentle person, and he had a keen sense of humor.  He opened his arms and his heart to all who were blessed to know him.  He was loved and will be deeply missed.  In many ways, with Lee’s passing, it is the end of a very unique and cherished Era.

CONGRATULATIONS TO PENNY LETO & THE COFFEE MILL….. We attended The Coffee Mill Studio’s Young Dance Collective production at Tennessee Williams Theatre on April 2, and were blown away at the quality of these young dance students.  Bravo!!!!  They were all superb!  This says a lot about the exceptional training & instruction by ballet master Joseph Goodman and Kara Querio.  It was an outstanding program.  Our community is blessed to have such stellar talent.  One more thing… among all these beautiful female dancers, was one very adorable young male dancer….. His name is ALEXANDER HUNT, and he is the talented son of non other than Christa Hunt, also known as TaTah Du Jour.  What a Star Alex is going to be!!!!!  He will be great fun to watch in the years to come….. as we did with Spencer Gates, Belle Jampol, and Clinton Curtis.

NEW SERIES TO BE FILMED IN THE KEYS…..This series is set to film in 2022 and is based on the 2013 novel, BAD MONKEY, by Carl Hiaasen.  I mention this mainly because the exec producer and star will be VINCE VAUGHN, who graduated from Lake Forest High School with our daughter, Melissa.  He was a real talent back then…. and I once told him, “Vince… you are going to be a big star someday!  Someday we will see your name in lights!”  Then in Melissa’s yearbook, he wrote… “So great getting to know you, Melissa.  I love your Mother!”  Cute!!!  Anyway….keep an eye out in 2022… who knows, maybe Vince will be ordering a brew from a barstool next to you at your fave saloon!/? VINCE SIGHTINGS HAVE ALREADY TAKEN PLACE!!!!!

THE WILLIAM WELCH LEGACY….This wonderful man and amazing artist is no longer with us,  and he is missed more than words can say.  However, his beloved sister, Sherrey Welch , and Bill’s partner Dave,  are determined to keep Bill’s art and legacy alive through the new website, at www.williamwelchcollection.com.   Please forward this info to anyone who may be interested in Bill’s work retrieved from Nantucket, Key West and France.  Bill Welch was a true gentleman…. kind, caring and deeply talented….
