DEAR READERS….. I am so used to telling everyone ‘where to go’….. and now….I am telling everyone where NOT to go…  of course, it is relatively easy as, there are very few places open and we are all home bound anyway!!!!    How ironic that  we reside in a Vacation Wonderland…. the weather is divine…. and yet…..our social life has come to a halt.  All the activities on our ‘dance card’ have been cancelled or postponed!   With that being said, I ask  “How are you all spending your time?”  My day goes a bit like this….   I have been sending lots of email messages to people….also texts…. I have a pile of great books that I am finally getting to read…. just finished “Mrs. Everything” by Jennifer Weiner (excellent) and just started “Fleishman is in Trouble” by Taffy Brodesser-Akner.  (Let me know if you have any really fabulous books you could highly recommend.)  I try to say the Rosary several times a week….. I  am receiving some hilarious things in the mail…. and ordinarily I would not have the time to read them… now I LOVE receiving them and NEEDING a good laugh!!!    One person who has really cheered me up is ALISON TEAL… who is finding the most hysterical things and passing them on.  She is providing such a great service during this time of gloom and doom.  And now her fabulous daughter, Willa, has come to Key West and is offering to pick up things at the grocery or pharmacy if need be.  I say, the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree!!!    There have been many inspirational, educational, and serious things being sent  to me too….. things that challenge me to think long and hard about what we are all going through….  and questioning how we got to this place and why it is taking so long to get testing kits, etc.   (And by the way….. how was a Tiger able to get tested for Covid-19 and not Us?)….We stay inside most of the time, though I do try to get at least 20 minutes of sunlight every day (vitamin D)….. We stay connected with friends and family…. emails, calls and zoom meeting with our family in Ohio…….We wear masks whenever we are out in public, either for a walk, a bike ride, at the market, post office, the bank, etc.  I have never had cleaner hands!!!!   I am writing to people…. sending cards, notes, and letters…. remembering people on their special days…..(Check out all those special people celebrating birthdays and anniversaries that I mention with each passing day, and send them a note, email or text…When I get something in my mail box I am more elated than I can tell you!)  We probably watch way more TV than we should be, but  it is a sign of the times, and things change constantly and we want to stay on top of things!!!!   You may not agree, but my new heroes  have become Governor  Andrew Cuomo and Dr. Tony Fauci….  They are honest and believable and have secured my trust.  We need to have faith in what our leaders are saying during these uncertain times.   In my personal opinion, I think these two men tell it like it is … no baloney.  They explain everything, making us understand the  facts and  they have not let me down yet.  They give us hope for the future, but they do not give us false hope.   Closer to home, Mayor Teri Johnston is a hero and she should be congratulated for making important decisions to protect us before the rest of Florida did.  In my opinion she is saving lives day after day.  We are all in this together,  my friends, and I do believe that we will survive…. and overcome!  And that leads into…….

APPROPRIATE SONGS DURING THIS TIME….  I WILL SURVIVE…. is one song that is relevant during this time…. Other songs that come to mind are…. ALWAYS LOOK TO THE BRIGHT SIDE OF LIFE….. THE SUN WILL COME UP TOMORROW…. DON’T WORRY, BE HAPPY…..  SMILE….. I WHISTLE A HAPPY TUNE…LET A SMILE BE YOUR UMBRELLA…. PUT ON A HAPPY FACE…. Find comfort in the lyrics…..and know you are loved and there is HOPE!!!!  Do you have any to add to this list?

GROCERY SHOPPING AND TAKE OUT…. This video is most informative on grocery shopping and ordering and bringing in Take Out Meals…..  Go to https://m.youtube.com/watch?y=sjDuwe9KBps&feature=share#menu.  Even the simplest things we took so for granted have become a major deal, but again…. these are important guidelines to follow for  OUR safety’s sake.  If you do not look at the video…… make sure you wash off all your packaging when you bring your bags home… throw boxes away…. the virus can live for a long time in the freezer, so it will still be there when you take your pizza box out.  Best to remove the pizza out of its box and discard the box and only freeze the pizza in its plastic covering.  It is time consuming but essential for now, and maybe forever.  Only God knows and He’s not telling!!!!  I wipe everything down with Lysol wipes and then wash my hands. Keep washing those hands!!!!!

AMY CULVER….  Just want you all to please keep Amy Culver, former owner of Mangoes, and one of  Key West’s very popular and beloved characters….. has contracted the virus and is in strict quarantine as she battles it.  She had recently returned from Mexico, but she claims, that as far as she knew, she was not exposed to anyone who had the virus…..Please keep Amy in your thoughts and prayers.  I understand that she has a Facebook page where she is writing all about this.  Not being on Facebook, many of you know more about this than I do.  

***BIG ANNOUNCEMENT ON THE 2020 WATERFRONT PLAYHOUSE AQUA IDOL…Various options about completing the Final Two weeks of Aqua Idol were discussed and considered, including hosting  a Virtual Idol….. However, because so many people in town are hurting…. are not employed, and are needing financial assistance during this crisis, we felt we would move the final two nights to November, 2020… seven months from now.  We are hoping  that by then, there would be some kind of light at the end of  this dismal tunnel and new rules might be in effect.  Our final eight singers were all in agreement that they preferred to wait when they can sing once again, in front of a live audience and they did not want to take dollars away from those  who are truly struggling right now.  So…. we will wait until the Fall… see what happens and then go from there.  Keep optimistic that we will make this happen…..It is a bit of JOY that we can all look forward to!!!!  In the meantime…I do NOT want you to forget the Final Eight Vocalists whom we have all come to know and love………They are….  BOB WOOD …. CONGRATULATIONS  and CHEERS TO GREEN PARROT AND BOURBON STREET….. It seemed like a strange time to make this announcement, but these are strange times….. The Green Parrot and Bourbon Street on Duval have announced that smoking at these institutions will now be prohibited!!!!  This is a great decision….. congrats to all those who are in charge…. we hope and pray that other bars that have allowed smoking will follow suit.  It is the right thing to do.  Many of the spots that allow smoking  have outdoor bars that the smoker can patronize and smoke away.  Second hand smoke is not a safe thing…. and right now being safe is what it is all about!

AWESOME FOUNDATION KEY WEST!!!  Friend Michael Shields asked that I mention this Foundation that he is heavily involved in.  Globally, there are 90 chapters…there are 50 in the USA, with 5 in Florida, including Key West.  Over $4.4 million granted since 2009.   The mission of the group is to bring more awesomeness to our town, and spreading it by awarding $1,000 grants with no strings attached to the most awesome idea, project, proposal, or plan that is presented to the Group of Trustees, who each plop down from their own pockets the money to fund the Grant.  Sounds totally AWESOME to me!!!  Check it out online at www.awesomefoundationkeywest.org.  These awards have been given since Oct.  To date, over 60 applicants have been received.  As coordinator of this group, Michael Shields is serving as the Dean.

THE SAVING OF THE BANYAN TREE…. On this day in 2008 a fence was built in front of one of the largest and most popular Trees in all of Key West.  It stands across the street from  our house on Caroline St.  I went out and confronted the men who were destroying the majestic beauty of this Tree…. photographed by years by so many people.  They said they were just doing their job.  Within an hour, I had contacted Commissioners Clayton Lopez and others and also then Citizen writer, Mandy Bolen (now Miles)…..  The next day it made the newspaper and one week later, on April 17th,  the fence was removed and reconfigured, so that the magnificent trunk and root system could still be viewed by tourists and locals for many years to come!  It was a proud moment for me….. and I thank Mandy, Clayton and all who helped me make a wrong thing right!!!!

It is inevitably a beautiful day…..with happy families gathered outside on the beautiful grounds of St. Mary’s…. Fr. John Baker has the Mass…. gives a glorious and welcoming homily and everyone feels a sense of love, community and hope.  The churches all over town are overflowing with attendees….. some who only come once a year…. but all welcomed and celebrated!  Know that you will all be remembered in our Easter thoughts and prayers.

IMPROMPTU CONCERTS…. CANCELLED FOR UNTIL NEXT SEASON.  (Congrats on a great season!!!) 

A WONDERFUL MEMORY FROM 2004…. Maybe you were there!!!!  On April 19, 2004, I had the honor and privilege of appearing LIVE ONSTAGE in Christopher Peterson’s EYECONS Show!  How did this happen?  We were at an auction for the then, Key West Symphony, and one of the live auction items was  ” A Chance to Perform Live Onstage in Christopher Peterson’s Eyecons Show at LATEDA!!!!  My dear husband Bob, bid on it and won…. and said… “I got this for you! (meaning me!)”…. OMG!!!!   After meeting with Christopher several times, and sharing ideas, we became great friends and the whole experience was quite an adventure…one that I will always treasure… from going to his home to be try on an array of amazing gowns…. to rehearsing songs in his living room… it was a hoot!!!   That night,  a full house was there, including my dear Mother Queen Adele Stevens…..on April 19, 2004…. Chris made me up into quite the glamorous Drag Queen…. fabulous glittery gown, lots of golden tresses…. unbelievable makeup…. and Voila!  the rest is History!  I sang ‘When You’re Good To Mama’ from Chicago, and even went into the audience while singing… and then Christopher and I sang the hilarious song “Class” , also from Chicago as a duet…. and it was sooooo much fun!!!!  Christopher performed with me as Bette Davis … and the audience cheered me on!  Bob presented flowers to me onstage…. and my Mother just loved it…. When the show was over, she, proud mother that she was, said to Christopher…. ” Wasn’t my daughter wonderful?  By the way, you weren’t bad either!”  That was my mom… my biggest fan!  Anyway….that event created a special bond between Christopher and Me that endures to this day.  And I  still have the distinction for being the only person to perform Live with Christopher in his Show!!!!

THE ARIES PERSONALITY…MARCH 21 THROUGH APRIL 20

It is hard to ignore the Arien….they have so much personality and vitality, making them the sort of people who like to be noticed! They hate taking back seat in life and will do anything to prevent it! They are natural leaders, not followers. The last thing any Arien wants to do is carry out other people’s orders or be at their beck and call. They loathe being just one of the crowd, and this attitude doesn’t change as they get older. They have to be in control of situations and do not like it one bit when it is the other way around. Life is very black & white for Ariens, with no grey area. They are very idealistic, and always have high expectations that things will turn out well. They have a burning desire to achieve…have an infectious enthusiasm and an adventurous spirit. An Arien without a goal is a sad sight, as they are lost without anything to aim for. They are easy to lose their tempers but it is all over in a flash. One minute they may be shouting their heads off and the next they have forgotten all about it. They do have a problem with bluntness…they like to tell it like it is and this sometimes leads to hurt feelings when they go too far and do not realize the impact of their words. They are outspoken….and if they curb that it would take so much fun out of things! In love, they dream of fairytale romances…they love the thrill of the chase, often finding it the most exciting part of a relationship….often cooling off when they get what they want. Their generous spirit and warm personality make them wonderful friends and delightful lovers. Sex is very important to them and they enjoy a very physical relationship with their partners. They have the utmost faith and trust in people. They fall in love easily and invest everything in their lover. Their hearts are shattered when that partner fails to live up to their expectations. They have a tendency to put loved ones on a pedestal, thinking they can do no wrong. All is great while they are on that pedestal but the moment they turn out to be human, the Arien is crushed and let down and in lots of pain. However, Ariens do not learn from their mistakes and often repeat them over and over again! The best signs for an Aries are Capricorn, Gemini, and Scorpio. In careers, the Arien cannot be tied down as they are free spirits. They must have a job with room to breathe. They hate having a job which requires them to account for their every action. They will become bored and frustrated in these situations. They prefer being self-employed because most Ariens have a low opinion of their higher ups. Their competitive nature makes them natural freelancers…they love coming up with new ideas. Jobs like engineering, mechanics, the armed services, and sports appeal to Ariens. They are better at dreaming up ideas than in following them. They cannot live without money…love spending it and are suckers for impulse buys. They love spending on cars, special bikes, and are attracted to speed and danger. They are also very generous and spend lots of money on friends and loved ones. Saving money is not as interesting to an Arien as spending it. They live for today and not to morrow!!
