JULY 15 THROUGH AUGUST 4,  2020 …. KEY WEST WITH LYNDA….

MY DEAR READERS….  We have been  at Rose Cottage since June 6th and have been enjoying of our time here.   Our garden never looked better…. the weather, though hot as Hades last week, has been lovely!  We continue to follow all the essential rules, in spite of the fact that so many, like those in other places…. are pretending that Covid-19 is over.   We had a wonderful visit with our daughter, Melissa  in June, and now our niece Jennifer Stevens and husband Peter and family (from Williamsburg) have returned to their cottage just a few doors away from us, and it’s a joy to have them here!!!  I continue to get disturbing reports from lots of our friends in Key West that things have turned upside down since  the blockades were lifted in Key Largo.  This does not surprise me.  What surprises me is that those who pushed hard and loud for opening up, are not adhering to the three very simple rules….. physically and socially distancing… wearing a facial protector….. and washing  hands….often.   These three tasks will help us all….In my humble opinion, IT IS THE LEAST WE ALL CAN DO TO HELP  during this challenging time!!!!  THE LEAST!!!!   When in a confined area, it just makes sense that you wear the mask.  I understand that when throngs of tourists are walking on Duval that it is hard to social distance…. that is one of the major reasons that make the wearing of MASKS of any kind,  imperative.  I have heard that some tourists have gotten downright surly when the proprietor tries to enforce the rules, so they give in to the tourist….  But I implore all proprietors of restaurants, stores, etc. to  enforce the rules.  If you do not you will make it bad for everyone.  Restaurants had to be closed again because workers who had the virus, or were not wearing masks, were allowed to work.  I really do not get it!  I am sick at heart to hear that our town is angry and at odds with one another…. and I have heard this from many people who tell me that locals are mostly not going out at all because of all the chaos.  But….   Read on…. Mayor Teri and City Manager Veliz are taking a firm stand…..

______________________________________________________________________________
WEDNESDAY
HAPPY JULY 15 BIRTHDAY TO…..MIKE CARON … ROB DISTASI …. TERRY CARPER … ZACK SEEMILLER ….CINDY STAR SIMPSON … JOE BEMENT … JONI LATEK … (Please remember Denys Fitzpatrick.)

BRAVO MAYOR JOHNSTON AND CITY MGR. GREG VELIZ!!!!….. Because of the vast disregard for following ‘the rules’…. it is time to take ACTION and that is what Johnston and Veliz have done.  THE NEW REALITY!!!!!   Everyone over the age of six MUST wear face coverings whenever they leave their homes or hotels, etc.  EVEN if they are able to maintain social distancing outdoors.   Violating the directive could lead to a misdemeanor charge and possible jail time.  This order comes in response to the huge rise of COVID-19 cases in the Keys these past several days, including a record  daily number over the weekend.  People do not have to wear masks while driving in cars or on a private boat…nor if you work in an office not open to the public.  There has been a mandatory mask law, but this new amendment makes it tougher on this Island that is dividing people.  There are now 611 confirmed cases and 6 deaths and Key West has the highest case count at 235 on Monday!  Because so many people are not voluntarily keeping their masks on in public, a decision had to be made.  The scientists and experts believe that wearing face coverings stops the spread… so now the Masks are Mandatory.  Fines of $500 and possible jail time of up to 60 days, plus higher penalties for repeat offenders…..will be what all are facing by disregarding such a very simple rule!!!!!
TODAY IN THE CITIZEN …..I read in today’s Citizen that enforcing is taking place and rightly so…..this is the only way that this mandate can work…. enforcing … so the rules are adhered to.  Word will get around that Key West Means Business!  People who want to visit Key West should come prepared to respect our wonderful Island and the truly amazing and marvelous people who live there.  We welcome tourists but not if they think they can come here and disregard what we stand for.  No one asked me but, in my opinion, if these mandates do not work and the bedlam with tourists continue I would support erecting the barriers again…. if not in Key Largo… than before people get to Stock Island.  What do you think?  Do you think  businesses should stay open with no rules while the numbers of infected soar?  To put our community in jeopardy… to crowd our hospitals with cases that we have no room for…. this is not a good thing.

BEARING SAD NEWS…..   I received the very sad phone call that I had been dreading…. that dear CHARLIE ALLEN passed away, after three days with hospice care, on July 11.  I had recently heard that Charlie was sent to the KW Rehab Center on Stock Island and I had a bad feeling about that.  Charlie’s beloved  daughter Wendy called to inform me of this sad news…..Charlie was very special to Bob and me ever since we met many years ago.  He was a true supporter of the Arts and we had the pleasure of having him on the Waterfront Playhouse Board for a long while.  He was charming, smart, opinionated, delightful and also an adorable curmudgeon…which we found endearing.  We loved him very much and will miss him terribly as will so many.  You can send messages of sympathy to Wendy Allen and her husband, Mike Boehme at:  2601 S. Roosevelt Blvd., #302 C, Key West, FL 33040.  Also, in today’s Citizen, there is a wonderful obituary on darling Charlie….He was a real treasure and his memory will live on in our hearts forever!
A LITTLE BIT AGO… I sent out a request for cards and notes to be sent to Charlie when he was first sent to the Rehab Center.  I do want to thank all of you who followed through and were able to contact him…. I had heard he received flowers and cards and messages.  No doubt Charlie loved hearing from you and he took his memory of you with him in his final days.

IN ADDITION…. We were also sad to hear about the passing of Brian Belanger, the dear husband of Queen Jodyrae Campbell, on July 9th.  Brian had endured serious health issues for a long while, but he managed to keep on going like the energizer bunny….he always had a great time and enjoyed life and especially adored his Queen!  You can send messages of condolence to Jodyrae at: 1400 Kennedy, #411, Key West, Fl 33040.

DAUGHTER OF KEVIN HOYES….. Attorney and all around wonderful man, Kevin Hoyes  lost his precious daughter, Alexandria ‘Lexi’ Hoyes, June 22… she was involved in an automobile accident.  Only 26, Lexi graduated from KW High School.  She was a lovely and gifted young lady who had the world at her feet.  There are no answers….only great sadness.  You can send Kevin Hoyes a message of sympathy at: 422 Fleming St., Key West, FL 33040.  Kevin and Lexi were very close and he is devastated as you can imagine.

SUPPORT TERI JOHNSTON FOR MAYOR…. Don’t know if you realize it but it is of utmost importance that Teri wins the Primary re-election on August 18… not wait until November.  Her race will be decided on Aug. 18.  She needs your support…. Please consider helping out by visiting her website at
https://mailchi.mp/110adae5eab6/launching-our-re-election.  Request a Yard Sign via the website…. Join the new Facebook Page….  I hope you have Key West’s best interests at heart and will vote for Teri Johnston!  Note that I ask you to please respect my choice of Teri as the Mayoral candidate….. as I respect yours.  I truly do think Teri has done an extraordinary and exemplary job these last two years!   If it were up to her I know she would not have lifted those barriers in Key Largo so soon… and  our numbers would have remained low.  Teri has only the best interests of the People of the City of Key West at heart.  We just received our ballots in Ohio and promptly voted!!!!

JANA KREJCIROVA….. Way back in mid March when Bob and I started to distance, our dear friend, Jana Krejcirova stopped by and I shared with her how scary this all was…..Jana was originally from Prague and she immediately said that Prague contained the virus immediately and mandated that everyone wear a mask wherever they went…. in or out.  Their numbers were amazingly low because they were following the rules right from the start.  Had we insisted that this simple act could help early on, and an example would have been set by our higher ups, many people could have not gotten sick nor might have not died.  Thanks to Jani she made a MASK believer out of us!!!!!

ELLEN STEININGER…. My friend Ellen, is most concerned about the chaos going on in Key West since things opened up.  Locals are feeling unsafe and she has established a FACEBOOK Page for Safety Reviews.  If you go out and feel that the shop or restaurant you went to was a positive and safe experience and felt comfortable while there…. please post it on this Page.  She requests no ‘bashing’… but if there are places you went to that you were concerned about I think it would be important info for locals to know.  Constructive opinions please.  I also think that as Locals who love Key West, if we do not like what we see in a certain establishment, I think we should have the courage to speak up.  Of course, if you have a bad experience somewhere, you are speaking out by not going there again.

THANK YOU AND CONGRATULATIONS TO THE WATERFRONT PLAYHOUSE !!!!  The Waterfront Playhouse deserves accolades for presenting  wonderful  radio shows onstage at the Playhouse.    We loved them all, the most recent two being REBECCA, starring Jessica Miano-Kruel, Ross Pipkin, David Black, Christopher Peterson, Gerri Louise Gates and John McDonald…..all perfectly cast…. and on July 11, THE AFRICAN QUEEN, starring Ross Pipkin and Peggy Malloy Montgomery….delightful!!!! Bravo!!!!

CRUISE SHIP UPDATE…..Beware of the Key West Bar Pilots Assoc.  This group of 4 men who make over $2 million a year bringing large cruise ships to Key West… (and for them, the bigger the cruise ship, the bigger their paycheck)….These 4 men have filed a lawsuit in a desperate attempt to take away Key West Citizen’s right to vote on the Nov. 3 referenda.    They are asking a federal judge to delete the questions from the ballot!  They are suing our non-partisan Supervisor of Elections, Joyce Griffin, the City of Key West and the dedicated Committee for Cleaner and Safer Ships….in a shameful effort to stop 15,000 voters from deciding the future of cruise ships in Key West.  As Arlo Haskell stated….”These questions are on the ballot because thousands of citizens braved a Pandemic to sign petitions that put them there.  Everyone deserves the right to be heard on this issue.  The Bar Pilots want to stop you from voting, plain and simple.”  Arlo continues with “These men know the Committee doesn’t have $2 million.  They know that the citizens are in this campaign not because we have any financial interests, but because we want to protect Key West’s Health, environment and economy for future generations.”  I IMPLORE EVERYONE WHO CARES ABOUT THE FUTURE OF KEY WEST….. TO SUPPORT ARLO AND THIS COMMITTEE by donating whatever you can to fight the KW Bar Pilots and their shenanigans!  You can contact Arlo at

SALUTING THE HOTELS AND INNS….No one has been impacted more than the owners and operators of Inns, B & B’s, hotels, etc in town!  I commend you all for everything you are doing to make things safe and sound for those who stay at your  wonderful establishments!  Two of my good friends, Kate Miano owner of The Gardens and Carol Wightman, owner of the Marquesa are doing everything to assure safety for their clientele…. and I am certain that every proprietor is doing likewise.  Personally, if I go to any place….hotels, restaurants, shops, etc. that are not making me feel safe….. I would cross them off my list and not go there again.  Everyone should be setting an example, don’t you think?  REMEMBER THE LEGENDARY COOKIE LADY…AKA MARILYN KELLNER?…. Did you know that this KW “Legend in her own Time,” still resides in Key West and that she is still spreading sunshine wherever she goes.???   Little known fact about her, is that not only is Marilyn a true Keys Icon, immortalized at Ft. East Martello…. and quite the baker….. she is also a talented artist, and during this time, she has been working on a ‘Corona Virus Series’ of paintings.  She is hoping she can help raise needed dollars to help restaurant workers and the like who have been out of work for some 9 + weeks…..  I ask, can anyone use them for a fundraiser?  If you have any thoughts or ideas of how you can use this series of three great paintings to help others out, please contact Marilyn at

I do believe that when we all send prayers and good vibes to those in need, those prayers mystically meet and surround those being prayed for.  Sometimes we pray for miracles and the impossible….sometimes we pray to just cope with the results of what happens to those we are praying for.  Sometimes we pray for strength to go on and to accept…sometimes we pray for thanksgiving.  We are in this thing called ‘Life’ together….and we all have power within us to help our fellow man.  Bless you for remembering our loved ones….Prayer changes things!  Let me know if you know of anyone who should be added to this list.
