CONGRATS TO FR. JOHN BAKER……pastor of the now, BASILICA OF ST. MARY STAR OF THE SEA PARISH! What a special honor it is, and what a grand surprise to have this announced at services on Feb. 11 & 12. I saw Fr. John at Mary Ann Worth’s birthday bash on Fe 10, and he said he had to leave early as he had to “work on his homily.” Now I know why he had to leave….to write a very special talk announcing this grand secret he had been keeping for quite some time! It was quite a morning at St. Mary’s and he was just grinning like the Cheshire Cat! Anyway….St. Mary’s is the first Parish to be named a lesser Basilica (There are only 4 major Basilicas and they are all in Italy, including St. Peter’s.) in the Miami diocese. There are only 74 Basilicas so named in the United States. This is a huge honor. And if a Pope were to visit the Miami diocese, St. Mary would be the church he would visit, because it is the “Pope’s church!” Amen and Hallelujah!!!!

LOVE LETTERS AT RED BARN…..On Sun., Feb. 19, we were at opening night of LOVE LETTERS at the Red Barn….a two night only show, starring real-life sweethearts, Joy Hawkins and John Wells. Their characters, Andy and Melissa, read countless letters they had written to each other since they were little children. Sounds like an easy task…..no memorization needed. Wrong! These two wonderful actors, the Lynn Fontanne & Alfred Lunt, of Key West, kept us riveted to our seats…wondering how this relationship would go…..where it would lead…what would happen. After Act I, I had a totally different idea of what I thought would happen, than what actually did. It was a most complex relationship shared by this couple. Let me tell you, Joy and John did an amazing job……and at the end, John was in tears. It was very moving and very very special. If you are lucky to have been there, you know what I mean….and if you are lucky enough to be there on Monday, Feb. 20th, you will share the personal and intricate relationship of these two characters. MERYL STREEP IN IRON LADY…..I have seen a lot of movies through the years….and some really good ones this year. Recently we saw Iron Lady about Margaret Thatcher. I tell you, if Meryl Streep is passed over for an Oscar again this year, something is terribly wrong with the academy voters. Whether you liked the movie or not, her performance is something amazing to behold. What does she have to do to win? Nominated nearly every year, she hasn’t won since 1983. That’s a sin. Pisces is certainly the sign of the saint or the sinner…or both rolled into one. You could say they have a tendency to look at the world through rose colored glasses. They deceive themselves into believing that things are much better than they really are. They wear their hearts on their sleeve. They are born romantics, which makes them very sensitive to hurt and pain. They pour out their love and affection to their favorite people. It is natural for the Piscean to see the best in others, and that is why they have so many admirers. However, it puts the Piscean at risk of potential heartbreak because it makes them blind to a loved one’s failings. Pisceans are drawn to the film industry, photography, dance, designing, the cosmetics and fashion industries. They often run nightclubs or breweries. Many also devote their lives to looking after others, as hospital, prisons, and hospice centers. They can be totally self-sacrificing and the religious and contemplative life attracts them. Whatever they end up doing in life, they need to be surrounded by people who appreciate them. “Filmmaker Quincy Perkins came across a poignant story in his trip to Peru last year with a Rotary International Humanitarian Trip. He heard the story of young boys who leave their families for months at a time and travel 18,000 feet into the Andes Mountains and work along the most treacherous stretch of road on the Panamerican Highway. They work on small wooden go-carts and they save stranded truckers. They are masterful mechanics and have been known to save lives up at those altitudes. There is a picture (which is attached) of these boys in action while he was there. Now he is working to bring their story to the big screen. He is working with Anne O’Shea, Blake Hunter, and Oscar-nominated director Sara Nesson to go to Peru for 1 month and embed himself with the boys in their camps along the highway. He will be traveling in dangerous areas with the help of another cameraman, sound guy and security. He is currently producing this documentary from Key West and the editing and post-production will also take place on our island. He is currently raising money at this website :
