JANE GILBERT IS THANKFUL….                                   “I am so thankful as I drive up to Deland, Florida, for my granddaughter Maia’s graduation, summa cum laude, from Stetson University.  Because of family difficulties, Maia came to live with me when she was fourteen, and attended Key West High School.  At the time, she dressed and made herself up “Goth” style, and thought she would want to become a beautician.  I must have cried on half the shoulders in Key West, when, in my sixties, I found myself parenting this headstrong young girl….not because I didn’t want to do it, but because I was afraid I wasn’t up to the task.  I received so much support and love, and that alone would be enough to be thankful for…but I am most thankful for Maia….for coming through, and becoming the best that she can be.  She has been editor-in-chief of the Stetson Literary Journal, president of the honors English Society, and she received other special honors and scholarships.  She will work for a year or two, and then go to grad school, and I know now, that whatever school she attends, she will be a star!”
