| MARCH 12 THROUGH MARCH 26, 2021… IN KEY WEST WITH LYNDA…. MY DEAR READERS….It was one year ago, when we realized that something was ‘not quite right with the world’! We had been hearing that a Pandemic was upon us….but we were hoping that it was not a big deal and it would not affect America. Then, our eyes were opened, and the reality and scope of the situation set in! Key West shut down on March 17…all the spring breakers and St. Patty’s Day revelers were sent home…. bars and restaurants were closed…and barriers were erected in Key Largo allowing only those living in Monroe County to enter. It was all surreal, scary, and challenging. The Waterfront Playhouse closed the fab ‘Priscilla Queen of the Desert’…. all theaters shut down…. we were mandated to stay in our homes … wash hands frequently, social distance, and be vigilant….soon after, mask-wearing became necessary and we lived in fear that COVID would somehow creep into our homes and put our lives in jeopardy. From March till June 1, Key West and Monroe County had very low numbers…. we were succeeding…keeping the virus at bay….few deaths or cases…. And then…. things changed as we opened up our town to tourists who were anxious to come to Key West to let loose and do whatever they wanted to do. Now, one year later, we went from 80 cases in Monroe County, and 3 deaths…. to more than 6,000 cases and 46 deaths. And sadly, our nation has lost nearly 540,000 persons to this awful virus. Residents and tourists have either fought all the mandates for protection, or accepted them and stayed vigilant. Now…..we have been blessed to have three wonderful vaccines to choose from and are being vaccinated…..we are hoping for eventual ‘herd immunity’ (like we are a herd of cows or buffalo or something)…and praying that some semblance of normalcy will prevail….. and I do believe it will! AND NOW WE ARE MOVING ON…….It has been a long time since my last blog…. but here I am….Since my second vaccine on Feb. 2, I am starting to feel more and more positive and hopeful…. I hope having the shots is not a false security, but we are both venturing out a bit more and are not as terrified of getting COVID as we were. I am optimistic that people will get their vaccines in large numbers. I truly feel that if that happens we will get slowly but surely (and again, don’t call me Shirley!) back to a ‘normal’ we can deal with, and life will be better for us all. I was relieved to hear that having company at your home with people whom have all been vaccinated, can take place without a mask or social distancing! Yay!!!! (Of course the mask should still be worn when out and about and the rules of decorum still remain, like washing hands and distancing.) My understanding is that after being vaccinated the chances of one contracting the virus is vastly lessened and if you do get it, it will not kill you. That is great news! So my friends…. PLEASE get the vaccine. By the way, for those of you who are afraid of the pain of the shot, we found it to be a breeze. I know a very few people I know who had some after-effects, but even they told me those side-effects, and having the security of knowing they are protected against COVID far surpasses not taking the vaccine! BOB!!!!…. Thanks to all who have been asking how Bob is doing after his hernia surgery… thankfully, he is doing well… and in fact, he will probably have his second hernia taken care of in the near future…. a less invasive procedure. Also, Bob was thrilled to get messages and cards from all out there who expressed their caring and concern. I know people are getting vaccines from Publix, Winn Dixie, and other spots. My friend Steve Russ said that Veterans serviced by the KW VA Clinic can book a vaccination by calling 305-293-4863…. the Miami VA is 305-575-7000. There are many options and right now…. more than the over 65 set is being included in obtaining the vaccine. I was elated to hear it is hoped that by the end of May all adults who seek the vaccine will be vaccinated. This is great news for sure!!!! UPDATE ON CRUISE SHIPS…..FOR ALL THOSE INTERESTED….. HOPE YOU ARE AWARE!!!…On Thursday, in the Key West Citizen, the headline read CRUISE SHIP BILL MOVES AHEAD. My heart sunk, and maybe yours did too. The people in Key West supported, in great numbers, the Cleaner, Safer, Smaller Ship Referenda… And yet, there continues to be a force who want to overturn this and take the Voice of the People away! There are some who are doing everything in their power to now take away HOME RULE from Key West that if is passed by the Senate will null all the efforts our people have made. This Bill 246, was introduced in the FLA legislature that would overturn the 3 Laws recently passed by KW Voters in regard to Cruise Ships. On Wednesday, March 10, the state legislative effort to overturn Key West’s voter-approved restrictions on cruise ships approved a bill that would remove the city’s ability to regulate its own harbor. Sen. Ana Maria Rodriguez let us down… she had filed an amendment that would have protected KW as a State Area of Critical Concern, but she withdrew it without even commenting on the well-documented lethal effects that large cruise ships have in the FLA Keys Marine Sanctuary. To quote Arlo Haskell….”She stabbed us in the back.” The new language eliminated Home Rule Control in only four of the state’s 15 seaports, and they are centering most of their animosity toward Key West… ignoring the voice of the people of Key West. The bill now moves to four more committee hearings…two on the Senate and two on the House. Additional changes could take place. However, if the committees can all come to agreement, the bill would move closer to receiving a full vote in the Legislature, where it is expected to pass. I am almost at a loss of what more can be done. Arlo Haskell and the Team who have worked so hard on behalf of the resident voters of Key West continue to have my support and hopefully, yours too. I feel it is still important to PLEASE KEEP CONTACTING Senator Ana Maria Rodriguez by emailing your letters to her at rodriguez.anamaria@flsenate.gov…. or call her at 850-487-5039… and Representative Jim Mooney at 850-717-5120 to DEMAND their OPPOSITION to this Bill that would totally invalidate Key West’s Citizens’ overwhelming support of sensible regulation of cruise ship traffic in our City. MARCH 12 THROUGH MARCH 26, 2021… IN KEY WEST WITH LYNDA…. MY DEAR READERS….It was nearly one year ago on March 15, when the realization that something was ‘not quite right with the world’ was happening! We had been hearing that a Pandemic was upon us….but we were hearing that it was not a big deal and it would not affect America. Then, our eyes were opened, and the reality and scope of the situation set in! Key West shut down on March 17…all the spring breakers and St. Patty’s Day revelers were sent home…. bars and restaurants were closed…and barriers were erected in Key Largo allowing only those living in Monroe County to enter. It was all surreal, scary, and challenging. The Waterfront closed the fab ‘Priscilla Queen of the Desert’…. all theaters shut down…. we were mandated to stay in our homes … wash hands frequently, social distance, and be vigilant….soon after mask-wearing became necessary and we lived in fear that COVID would somehow creep into our homes and put our lives in jeopardy. From March till June 1, Key West and Monroe County had very low numbers…. we were succeeding…keeping the virus at bay….few deaths or cases…. And then…. things changed as we opened up our town to tourists who were anxious to come to Key West to let loose and do whatever they wanted to do. Now, one year later, we went from 80 cases in Monroe County, and 3 deaths…. to nearly 6,000 cases and 44 deaths. Residents and tourists have either fought all the mandates for protection or accepted them and stayed vigilant. Now…..we have been blessed to have three wonderful vaccines to choose from and are being vaccinated…..we are hoping for eventual ‘herd immunity’ (like we are a herd of cows or buffalo or something)… and hoping and praying that some semblance of normalcy will prevail….. and I do believe it will! AND NOW WE ARE MOVING ON…….It has been a long time since my last blog…. but here I am….Since my second vaccine on Feb. 2, I am starting to feel more and more positive and hopeful…. I hope having the shots is not a false security, but we are both venturing out more and are not as terrified of getting COVID as we were. I am optimistic that people will get their vaccines in large numbers. I truly feel that if that happens we will get slowly but surely (and again, don’t call me Shirley!) back to a ‘normal’ we can deal with and life will be better for us all. I was relieved to hear that having company at your home with people whom have all been vaccinated, can take place without a mask or social distancing! Yay!!!! (Of course the mask should still be worn when out and about and the rules of decorum still remain, like washing hands and distancing.) My understanding that after vaccinated the chances of one contracting the virus is vastly lessened and if you do get it, it will not kill you. That is great news! So my friends…. PLEASE get the vaccine. By the way, for those of you who are afraid of the pain of the shot, we found it to be a breeze. I know a very few people I know who had some after-effects, but even they told me those side-effects, and having the security of knowing they are protected against COVID far surpasses not taking the vaccine! BOB!!!!…. Thanks to all who have been asking how Bob is doing after his hernia surgery… thankfully, he is doing well… and in fact, he will probably have the second hernia taken care of in the near future…. a less invasive procedure. Also, Bob was thrilled to get messages and cards from all out there who expressed their caring and concern. FLORIDA VACCINES…..The good news is that more and more places are offering the vaccine in Monroe County, and Key West. Google the Department of Health website in Key West to find out all the latest. I know people are getting vaccines from Publix, Winn Dixie, and other spots. My friend Steve Russ said that Veterans serviced by the KW VA Clinic can book a vaccination by calling 305-293-4863…. the Miami VA is 305-575-7000. There are many options and right now…. more than the over 65 set is being included in obtaining the vaccine. I was elated to hear it is hoped that by the end of May all adults who seek the vaccine will be vaccinated. This is great news for sure!!!! MY PERSONAL THOUGHTS ON THE VACCINE…. My understanding is that if at least 80% of the population gets vaccinated, it will provide the immunity we need to get back to some degree of normalcy…. things can get back to ‘the way we were’…at least sorta!!!! So, though I am not the boss of anyone, I do encourage everyone to get the vaccination….of course I understand there are those who don’t do well with vaccines or are squeamish about shots…. but I do encourage you to bite the bullet and be brave!!!! If you go out and feel that the shop or restaurant you went to was a positive and safe experience and felt comfortable while there…. please post it on this Page. She requests no ‘bashing’… but if there are places you went to that you were concerned about I think it would be important info for locals to know. Constructive opinions please. I also think that as Locals who love Key West, if we do not like what we see in a certain establishment, I think we should have the courage to speak up. Of course, if you have a bad experience somewhere, you are speaking out by not going there again… and make sure you let the establishment know how you feel. Also…. Many are asking ME for safe dining experiences and the like, so if you have things to promote, please let me know! IMPORTANT ON CRUISE SHIPS…..FOR ALL THOSE INTERESTED….. HOPE YOU ARE AWARE!!!… The people in Key West supported, in great numbers, the Cleaner, Safer, Smaller Ship Referenda… And yet, there continues to be a force who want to overturn this and take the Voice of the People away! There are some who are doing everything in their power to now take away HOME RULE from Key West that if is passed by the Senate will null all the efforts our people have made. This Bill 246, was introduced in the FLA legislature that would overturn the 3 Laws recently passed by KW Voters in regard to Cruise Ships. This is a Dark Money Scheme by people who are only concerned with their OWN agenda. They have been sending information riddled with blatant lies and scare tactics. Tallahassee has no sense of what is important to the people of Key West or what the people here want. Fundamentally, this is an issue on home rule and self-governance in Key West. “Our Harbor has been locally controlled since the beginning of Florida History and it is an insult that Tallahassee would now start to control the harbor!”.. sayeth our hero, Arlo Haskell!!! WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT OF THE KW CRUISE SHIP REFERNDA…. There are spoilers in our town who DO NOT want to concede that the Voters in Key West who overwhelmingly voted for Cleaner, Safer, Smaller Ships …WON. They are working hard to overturn these Referenda ….with no regard for the residents of our precious town. We must not stand for this treatment. YOUR HELP IS NEEDED!!!! The FLA Dept. of Health informs that on Jan. 15, Florida will be launching a website and a call center that allows persons over 65 and healthcare professionals to register for the COVID 19 vaccine! Please note that the Dept. has not yet received additional doses other than the initial 1,300 that were received and administered to healthcare workers and people over 65 with appointments. Please do not come to any health care center without an appointment. Walk ins and line forming are not good thing with the Virus all around us.
