DEAR READERS…Truly… with the ability to get the COVID-19 Vaccine, I am very optimistic and hopeful that our world will be moving in the right direction and that wonderful possibilities are just around the corner!  I am sending this blog out to cover the next few weeks of activity.  It is that time of year when many are getting ready to head for their summer homes, hither and yon.  We are planning to leave soon after May 22….always a bittersweet time….but thankfully we leave our beloved Key West for dear Rose Cottage at Chippewa Lake, Ohio….all good…we are blessed to live in two homes and towns we love!

***FLORIDA VACCINES…..It has NEVER been easier to schedule your COVID-19 Vaccine.   One thing I am passionate about is getting vaccinated.  The sooner everyone gets vaccinated the sooner we can all meet without masks and lead  a life of relative normalcy again.    Florida residents may visit www.myvaccine.fl.gov to register and schedule their own appointment for the vaccine.  Patients will see a list of state supported sites from which to choose appointments.  If no appt. is available nearby, patients will be notified as a new locale opens.  Many of our local Pharmacies are giving the FREE Vaccine even as a walk-in. Whatta deal!!!!   You can also call 833-540-2032 or 833-476-1038.  At this point sites in Monroe County are administering the Moderna vaccine, authorized for those 16 and Up.  You can also visit www.monroe.flhealth.gov/vax. ; Before long children will be getting them so that they can all go back to school in person next September!  If you know of any other way that we can get back to normal, please let me know!  I hate to be preachy, but I can’t help myself….By our getting vaccinated I am helping you and you are helping me!   By getting vaccinated I cannot get the virus and cannot give other people the virus.  I  know I couldn’t live with myself if I inadvertently contracted the virus and then passed it on to someone else and they got very ill or died because of my negligence to get the vaccine.  Could you?  So…please listen to the scientists and get that vaccine!  Thank you!  For all those who are on the fence about getting vaccinated….. I respect your thoughts,  ….But…because I love you…. I implore you that you please highly consider the big V… AND ENCOURAGE EVERYONE YOU KNOW also!!!!

UPDATE ON CRUISE SHIPS…..FOR ALL THOSE INTERESTED…..
PLEASE DON’T GIVE UP THE SHIP!!!!!   Along with getting Vaccinated, I am also passionate about Cleaner, Safer, Smaller Ships!!!!!   I applaud our wonderful Team of  19 Cavaliers who recently flew a chartered plane to Tallahassee to present Live Testimony to the Legislature and those who are trying desperately to overthrow the voice and the vote of the People of Key West.  We truly are like the little Mouse that Roared…. fighting those who don’t give a hoot and a holler about what the People in Key West want and voted for….. but are trying to take away Home Rule from our Town after being in use for some 200 years.  It is Obscene!  This overturn benefits only a very few.  They are perpetrating the BIG LIE that we, the little folk, who love our town and our Ocean…. and want to keep it safe and clean…. They accuse  the residents of KW with being ‘the ones with big bucks’..  claiming that we don’t want the Mega Cruise Ships because we are elitist and don’t want the ‘wrong kind of people’ visiting our Island.  Just the opposite is true…. THEY are the deep-pocketed people who are crazed that they won’t be gaining enough dollars from smaller, safer, cleaner ships.  We LOVE our tourists……ALL tourists…. Most of us are here in KW because we were once tourists and fell in love with this Island.   We also love the Naysayers in spite of their false accusations…..The naysayers and state legislatures say “It is not right for 10,000 some voters in Key West to put limits on cruise ships…. but isn’t it ironic, that 160 state legislatures think it is perfectly OK to tell these 10,000+ voters of Key West that we can’t limit the SIZE of the Cruise Ships?  It is NOT cruise ship passengers who are unworthy of visiting  Key West at all.. …. it is the the large, environmentally damaging, unclean, unsafe, Mega Ships that are unworthy of coming ….to  do damage to our reefs, our water, our air, fragile eco-system…. and THEY KNOW IT, but are trying all their tricks to make it seem that we are wrong and they are right… that they are suffering financially.    If you watched our brave and caring representatives from Key West go up to the podium one by one to express what we are all fighting for…. I was never prouder of our Town.  Thanks to all the fishermen who lost work by flying to Tallahassee… to Arlo and Evan Haskell … so eloquent and sincere…. the Benson Brothers… Kate Miano, Rita Troxel, Tony Yaniz…. the list goes on and on…. All people who were constantly interrupted by the moderator who gave our group little respect.  (We know where her vote lie)….And after hearing our plea they still voted to move the bill forward.  UNBELIEVABLE!!!!  
SO NOW WHAT HAPPENS?   
Following the Monroe County Commission’s Unanimous Vote to support the referendums passed by Key West voters and an Endorsement from the Editorial Board of the Miami Herald, a coalition of 24 leading environmental organizations and Florida Key’s Property Owners’ Associations have published an open letter to Governor Ron DeSantis, calling on him to help stop legislation that would overturn the vote and force Key West to accept larger cruise ships.   My concern is whose voice will the Governor listen to?  The Citizens who made their voices heard loud and clear by voting for Safer, Cleaner, Smaller Ships…. or the persons who seem to have only their self-interests at heart.  Will Home Rule prevail?   We are praying that  DeSantis will be able to evaluate fact from fiction…. that he will see  what the people of Key West want and voted for…. and see there are but a few people who stand to gain from reversing the vote.  I urge YOU to send letters to Governor DeSantis.  Tell him the truth… the REAL facts….Send these letters to him at: Gov. Monroe St….Tallahassee, FL 32399-0001.  Or email him at governorron.desantis@eog.myflorida.com.  Phone him at 860-717-9337.  THE PEOPLE OF KEY WEST ARE WATCHING…. THE WORLD IS WATCHING … What is going on is unconscionable…… It is SO apparent and obvious what the NAYSAYERS  are doing…it is so wrong!   I am hoping and praying that justice will be served and that our vote will not be overturned and David will beat Goliath!  I am praying that those who have not been on the side of the people of Key West and who may have once claimed they are environmentalists, realize that they still are….You know that the real Treasure of Key West, (besides the residents who live here)… is the Ocean surrounding us!!!   We need it clean, safe, and guarded…We have this  opportunity to do what is right….and how we can to protect it… PLEASE drop this bill and tear it into a million pieces….Side with the Key West Residents !  Please!

WE HAVE LOST  SOME SPECIAL PEOPLE… Since my last blog, I am very saddened to announce the loss of these shining stars… people who touched our lives in many ways….. They are:  HOLLY CMIEL whom we know as HOLLY DIAMOND, Peter’s wonderful partner in life.   Also passing are two former residents of Key West….author and journalist, MARK HOWELL, and BASIL MARKOW, husband of Roberta.  And I lost two high school friends, Tess Corolan and Ken Wisniewski. ….. and a great friend from my Lake Forest Years, Jacqui Blatchford.  We will remember these wonderful people who touched our lives and who will always hold a special place in our hearts

WE BID ADIEU TO CINDY CAMERON….  Our long-time friend, Cindy Cameron, is on to new exciting horizons.  She sold her home in Big Pine Key and has moved to Mt. Dora, Florida.  We met Cindy and her late husband, Jim, some 22 years ago as we were all big Bobby Nesbitt Fans.  Those were golden years as we first gathered around Bobby’s piano at the Pier House, and then the Roof Top Cafe, the Casa Marina, Kwest, and now Tavern n Town!    Let me know if you would like her new home address.   

DAVE BOOTLE AT MANGOES!!!!! APRIL 23,24,30……. DENIS LEBEDEV…. Dear Denis, suave and debonair manager from Tavern n Town, is about to embark on a new career. April 30 is his last day at Tavern N Town.  He and his partner are opening a new Breakfast/Lunch Restaurant on Fleming St., a couple doors away from Thirsty Mermaid.  We love Denis and wish him much success!!!!  MORE info to follow!!!!

PAT WEST AND CHIP ALLEN…. This dynamic duo have been in Key West for a short time, and it was great seeing them again!   We met them at Tavern ‘n Town last night, and listened to the great duo of Bobby Nesbitt and Carmen Rodriguez .  Afterward, Pat, Chip and Bob and I went to a super new restaurant, Bel Mare where the Commodore used to be.  What a terrific eve.    (Must add, that we sure do miss The Keys Piano Bar, the super spot that Pat and Chip used to run in KW, don’t we?)

COMEDY KEY WEST LIVES ON.. First of all I want to congratulate Comedy Club Founder,  Joe Madaus in establishing the Comedy Club at a great new location.  It is at 218 Whitehead St. (across from Audubon House Gift Shop)….. This is the ONLY Comedy Club in the Keys and it is a great one!   Only 50 tix sold per show.  Get tix by going online to www.comedykeywest.com…. or call 305-985-7370.  Masks and Social Distancing enforced…. MAJOR ANNOUNCEMENT ON AQUA IDOL….  It has been very frustrating having had to cancel our last two Idol performances way back in March 2020.  However I have some great news!!!!  PLEASE MARK YOUR CALENDARS!!!  WE WILL RESUME THE LAST TWO AQUA IDOLS FOR THE WATERFRONT PLAYHOUSE ON NOVEMBER 10 AND 17….. The new day is Monday, and the time will be 6 pm to 8 pm!  On Nov. 10, the Final 7 will each sing two songs… That night the 7 will be narrowed down to The Final Four!!!   Those Four Finalists will compete Head-to-Head on November 17….. again singing two songs….There will also be some Guest performers.  The Final Magnificent 7 are….. STEPHANIE WISE…. BOB WOOD…. BRIA ANSARA….JON HERNANDEZ… SARAH DORRANCE….. CARL TREY FORSYTH….AND …. CHARLII CLARK… all stars and fabulous enough to win the coveted Aqua Idol Waterfront Playhouse Title!   It promises to be a superb  NIGHT!!!!!!  (Note:  Unfortunately for us, one of our great finalists, GAYLA MORGAN, has moved out of town…she will be missed.)

******AQUA IDOL 2022 THEN BEGINS ANEW ON JANUARY 10TH!!!!  … Yes…. I have agreed to present this wonderful Fundraising Event for the Waterfront Playhouse once again!  I will be searching for more fabulous vocalists to WOW you when we begin again.  If you are interested in singing or know someone outstanding whom you can recommend, please let me know by emailing me the contact information.  We feel optimistic and confident that by this time most people will be vaccinated and we will be able to meet and enjoy time together once again!  Note that I have a commitment from the new manager at Aqua, Shawn Clark, that WE WILL ENFORCE NO SMOKING during our shows…. and our vocalists will each have their own Mic Covers….So….Great things are right around the corner.

AWESOME FOUNDATION KEY WEST!!!  …..Globally, there are 90 chapters…there are 50 in the USA, with 5 in Florida, including Key West.  Over $4.4 million granted since 2009.   The mission of the group is to bring more awesomeness to our town, and spreading it by awarding $1,000 grants with no strings attached to the most awesome idea, project, proposal, or plan that is presented to the Group of Trustees, who each plop down from their own pockets the money to fund the Grant.  Sounds totally AWESOME to me!!!  Check it out online at www.awesomefoundationkeywest.org.  These awards have been given since Oct.  To date, over 60 applicants have been received.  Michael Shields is the coordinator of this group.  READ ON….
