NANCY STEVENS
We go through life and meet a lot of people and make a lot of friends, but they say, you can count on one hand the people who mean the most in your life….In my life, Nancy Stevens was one of those people! She was the sister I never had…..a wonderful mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt, and friend. Today we all mourn her passing….but we also celebrate her life.
The first time I ever laid eyes on Nancy Nowosielski was at a Jr. High dance at the University Settlement on Fleet Ave. I couldn’t help but notice this petite, darling girl…she seemed to be very popular and was an excellent dancer. She also seemed to be very serious…didn’t smile a lot and seemed to be more mature than most of us who were there that night.
It was about a year later when I began my freshman year at St. Stanislaus, that I saw this girl again, and realized that she would be in my class…..me a girl from Transfiguration Elementary School….and Nancy from St. Stan’s.
As fate would have it, we became good friends. Our little group consisted of Maryann Krieger, Judy Gosiewski, Carol Wroblewski, Maryann Stanky, Nancy Nowosielski and me! Through those four years of high school we had great times and shared special memories together. Nancy began dating my brother Ed when she was a junior in high school. They were married four years later. I was in their wedding party in April and Nancy was in Bob’s and mine the following August.
We were all excited when Nancy gave birth to the first Stevens baby, Sally….Mom, Dad, Fred, and Bob and I drove down to Corpus Christi,TX to meet the little princess and that began a love affair with Sally that we have till this day.
As young marrieds, raising children, we spent a lot of time together, sharing memories, growing closer and closer. Mom and Dad bought a cottage at Chippewa Lake and we spent our summers there…15 of us staying all weekend… playing bridge, tennis, at the beach….those were great years that I will always treasure….memories to last a lifetime!
Long before Martha Stewart became a household name…Nancy was decorating, designing, baking, gardening, and cooking like no other. She was artistic, accomplished at all needlework….could turn weeds into a beautiful floral arrangement….Every home she lived in was charming and beautifully decorated…..her gardens meticulous and her meals were memorable and beautifully presented. It was no surprise that Nancy would become a floral designer extraordinaire! For 25 years she was a designer at Bachelor Button and I know she was loved and is terribly missed by Mark and John and everyone there..
Nancy had a great sense of humor and a sense of the ridiculous. I will never forget going to a movie with her…the theater was nearly empty. We found our seats, and just as the movie was to begin, someone came into this empty theater, and chose a seat directly in front of her. Her reaction was priceless…she looked at me and then laughed as only she could….and said “Who did I kill?”
Nancy was also one of those rare persons who would rather give than receive. She loved to shop and loved the quest of finding the perfect gift for you. She didn’t buy what she wanted…but what she knew would make you squeal with delight! My most treasured presents are from her. She found things that she knew I would love. In my home, we have priceless things that Nancy found just for me and we shall treasure them always. This past Christmas, as we opened the holiday decorations, box after box contained a Nancy memory….something she bought for me or created with her own hands…..now more meaningful than ever. Nancy also sent gorgeous cards for all occasions….all keepers….I will miss receiving her always amazing Christmas cards….usually receiving multiples….a tradition begun by the Queen Mother, Adele…..making Christmas so extra special
When Nancy and Ed’s marriage ended, our relationship with her did not. She was not only my sister-in-law, but one of my dearest friends….the godmother of our son, Rob….and a loving aunt to Melissa, our daughter. She was also one of my mother’s best friends, and when Nancy bought a house, she bought one close to my mother. When my mother passed away a year ago Sept. 30, it was Nancy who was with her, holding her hand at the end.
When Nancy’s illness was diagnosed, she handled the news with class and dignity. Right after she found it out, we sat at the beach at Chippewa Lake and she shared that she accepted it…that she was ready for whatever would happen. At that time, she imagined that she would undergo chemo or radiation or a special program the doctors had in mind. She maintained her sense of humor and was able to laugh in spite of the seriousness of her illness.
After her surgery and the setback that followed, Nancy decided that she would not undergo any procedure….that she would let go and let God. When Nancy made up her mind about something, that was that…Case Closed! She shared that she was ready for whatever God had in store for her…that she was at peace with her decision….and she never looked back. She wanted to spend what time she had left at Holy Family Center, and thankfully, she was able to get in right around Thanksgiving. She handed everything over to Sally, her firstborn, and Sally took total control of the situation. Nancy shared that she did not know what she would do without Sally and Robert. Because of the nature of the tumor that Nancy had, we knew her time was limited…..that barring a miracle, the tumor was fast growing and aggressive. So, just before Christmas, Bob and I flew in to Cleveland to visit with Nancy. We wanted to make sure we saw her while she was still lucid and able to communicate. It was a visit I will never forget.
I had a chance to share my heart with Nancy….to thank her for all the things she has done for me and how much she meant to me through all these years…..we shared stories and memories….I told her about how our home was decorated with all the wonderful things she gifted us with and created for us….She seemed overwhelmed that I was mentioning all these things….and she was amazed that I still had some of these things and displayed them every year. Nancy loved baking Christmas cookies….and she told me that she felt bad that she couldn’t bake again this year. What she did not know, and what I told her was that I had frozen one of the containers of cookies she baked last year, and that I had brought them out this year and they were still delicious. She nearly fell off the bed, with this news. She couldn’t believe it…and she had a good laugh. I thanked her for always being there for me. I told her that besides my mom and husband, she was the one person I could always count on. She always had my back and was there for me when no one else was….loyal to a fault. I told her that in all the years of our knowing each other, we never had an argument, and she marveled at that…and agreed that that was unique. I thanked her for her children, Sally, Eddie and Jennifer…and commended her on being such a devoted mother to them. I told her how much it meant to me that she loved Mom Adele so, and was there with her right to the end. I told her how much I loved her and that I will miss her all the days of my life, and she said the same to me.
When I made my last visit to her, it seemed as if she was asleep. I sat there awhile, and then started talking to her, telling her we would be leaving the next morning…and as I spoke she turned toward me and opened her eyes. I took her hand and said…..”Nancy…what I am praying for is a miracle that this tumor would just disappear. But, if that doesn’t happen, I am praying that you go peacefully and with no pain.” She said that I should pray that she does not linger and that God takes her quickly.” I then said, “When the time comes and you go to heaven, would you please watch after me?” She looked at me, squeezed my hand and said….”Lynda…I promise, I promise, I promise…I will always be there for your looking after you….I promise.”
Nancy always keeps her promises…..she is one person I can always count on….even in death, I know in my heart that she is there for me watching over me.
One more thing…..I like to think that as Nancy entered through those pearly gates…..she was greeted by my Mother and Father and my brother Fred, sitting and waiting for their fourth at the bridge table.
Presented by Lynda Frechette on Friday March 23, 2012 to honor Nancy Carol Stevens.
