HAPPY MAY 27 BIRTHDAY TO…BOB HOULIHAN….COLE STEVENS…… HAPPY ANNIVERSARY TO… PAT WEST & CHIP ALLEN…..KIM & JAMES FISHER!
DEAR READERS…..It is with great sadness that I share with you the loss of a very dear and special person and friend…..KATHY MELENDY! I met Kathy on the tennis courts at Bayview Park at least 17 years ago…..she and her husband, Vince, were two of the nicest people there. Kathy was a real cheerleader, always organizing and planning gathering on special occasions like Easter and Thanksgiving. She was so active….going from tennis….then to work out at the gym… and we even took tap class together for a long time. When her father was alive, he came and stayed with her for a long period at a time….and she took great care of him. She was a little dynamo with a spunky personality and a great big heart. When she was diagnosed with her illness a year ago…. everyone who knew and loved her rallied around her and were shocked that this could happen to her…. of all people! She sent out brave letters to her friends and was determined to do everything in her little body to get well and beat this disease. She never complained….she just moved forward kept upbeat and positive, and we were all glad that she was able to come to Key West and spend this last season in Paradise. She continued to entertain….to host parties after Bobby Nesbitt and Carmen Rodriguez’s cabaret shows at The Little White House….She appeared at many of the performances at Tennessee Williams….always a smile on her face…..and determination in her eyes. Her curly hair was replaced by an assortment of wigs and hats that many friends had sent to her. We last saw her at Salute where she and Vince came to see and hear Bobby Nesbitt and Skipper Kripitz entertain ….their last time performing for the season….I went up to Kathy and hugged her and asked her how she was doing…. Her demeanor veiled the fact that things were not good, and she said ‘I’m doing fine.’ I found out later that Kathy and Vince were returning to Boston, and that things were failing. On May 24, I received two messages from Vince…one telling me that Kathy had received the photos I sent to her…pictures I had snapped during this past season at various events…..all showing a face filled with wonder and joy….He said that she loved them and wanted to call me to thank me, but was too weak…that she was, in fact, in hospice. Several hours later, the second message came that ‘Kathy was now at peace.’ And so that is that. A tale of a woman who lived life and lived it to the fullest….a person who was greatly loved and cared about….Kathy Melendy, tiny in stature but bigger than life. She taught us how to live…..to not give up….to make each day count…..She was an example for us all. Please remember Kathy in your thoughts and prayers….and Vince, too…the love of her life, truly her Knight in Shining Armor. They shared a very special love story right until the end. You can remember Vince by sending him cards and messages to Vincent Melendy…2 Battery Wharf..Unit #2301, Boston, Mass 02109. A Celebration of Kathy’s life will be held in Key West in the Fall. AUDITIONS FOR ‘THE TRIP TO BOUNTIFUL” ON JUNE 2…..This play will be presented on the Waterfront Playhouse Stage Jan. 24 thru Feb. 11. Auditions will take place at The Waterfront Playhouse from 5:30 to 7:30 pm on Thursday, June 2. Director is Murphy Davis. Needed are 5 men and 2 women…need experienced actors who can do a Tesas accent. Auditions will consist of cold readings of brief scenes from the script. The play involves a woman who has to live with a daughter-in-law who resents her and a son who does not dare take his mother’s side. Mother, Carrie, is unhappy and dreams of returning to Bountiful, the home where she was raised. It is truly a heartwarming and moving story, as Carrie runs away and embarks on her destination to go to her childhood home.
