RECAP OF SONGWRITER’S FESTIVAL…..What a great event in Key West! It has to be one of the most wonderful of the many FESTS that grace our Island town. Our daughter, Melissa, came down for her fourth year of enjoying and sharing this week with us….we saw some amazing new vocalists, like Mignon Grabois, Fiona Bevan, Cam, Maren Morris, Skye Claire, Colby Dee, & Adam James, and some old smoothies, like Even Stevens and Earl Bud Lee… we got to hob-nob with members of the hot group, Old Dominion, and they were as nice as can be….posing for photos and even giving me their email addresses. The major high point of the week was the closing event at Casa Marina, featuring some great singers plus the headliner, JEFFREY STEELE whom I love and who put on a fantastic show!!!! It was a marvelous event… included a delicious dinner….(it had poured just an hour before hand and we thought the event would be cancelled, but the rain stopped, the sun came out and it was a beautiful evening.) And then there was ASHLEY DAWN!!!!
“ONLY IN KEY WEST STORY ABOUT ASHLEY DAWN”….Melissa and I were enjoying all the entertainers at Smokin Tuna on May 12…..all wonderful. We noticed blonde, statuesque beauty… a ringer for Scarlett Johannesen….in the audience, who obviously knew a lot of the singer/songwriters… we assumed she was one of those who would be performing….. Anyway…. Later on that evening, we saw shows at Sloppy Joes’s and later at Green Parrot. We made another brief stop, and as we headed home, coming toward us was the Scarlet look-alike, we had seen earlier in the day…. with a guitar on her back. As we approached each other on Simonton St, I said to her, “ We saw you at Smokin Tuna today…are you coming from the place you performed at tonight?” She smiled and said her name was ASHLEY DAWN….and she lived in Nashville and was a singer/songwriter but was not invited to perform during the Fest. But then….she said…”You know what? I am going to sit down right here and play and sing for you right now!” She took her guitar out of its case and sang not one, but two amazing and wonderful songs….an impromptu concert just for us at about midnight in front of the fire station!!! A magical Key West moment for sure!!! Remember that name… because I think she should be a big star! By the way, she was with Philip White who had just performed onstage at the Key West Theater. He snapped some photos of us, and Melissa recorded some of the songs she sang. Ashley was not only beautiful, but charming and had a great personality and sense of humor … plus all that talent and pizzazz!!!! ONLY IN KEY WEST!!!!
WITH GREAT SADNESS……Dear, special and wonderful ELOISE KEISER passed away, peacefully, on May 7th… just five months prior to what would have been her 100th birthday, Oct. 14. There was a marvelous obituary in The Citizen on May 10…..Eloise was quite the gal….led an amazing life… a true inspiration to all of us who were blessed to know her and call her friend….and, to know her, was truly to love her. Key West will not be the same without Eloise Keiser!!!
ERIC WEINBERGER…..The brilliant, kind, sweet, talented, lovely Eric Weinberger, passed away after a long illness, on May 16th. As dear a man as I have ever known, our hearts ache with his loss. Eric was the author of the book of the musical ‘A DOG STORY’ which premiered on the Waterfront Playhouse stage….and then, along with Gayla Morgan, took it to New York where it was presented off Broadway to wonderful reviews. In addition….. I just got word that a long time friend of mine, Dick Walsh, whom I used to teach with in Ohio, passed away suddenly on Mother’s Day. My heart aches.

BRIAN MARTINEZ……Brian is the beloved son of our dear friend, Tony Martinez, who was once an active part of the Key West community. Tony’s son, Brian, has been battling brain cancer for many years. I just received word from Tony that Brian has been released from the hospital and is under hospice care. All treatments have failed. Please keep Tony, Brian, Dawn (Brian’s wife) and the children in your thoughts and prayers at this very difficult time.

UPDATE ON OUR SON, ROB FRECHETTE…..Miraculously, our son, Rob, survived a 30+ foot fall from a ladder on April 13. What could have been a fatal event…..turned out to be something amazing. He spent a few days in the hospital….no broken bones no missing teeth…a few scrapes…and a concerning concussion….a few stitches in his head…. Aside from this, he is back at work, not allowed to climb ladders, and although he is dizzy in the mornings…. He is doing well. Amen! How does one explain this kind of thing? I close my eyes and imagine him falling, and angels coming by to carry him down and placing him on the black top below. Thanks for all your thoughts, prayers and concern. It means a lot. My biggest worry is that whenever there is a trauma to the head, serious problems could arise in the future. Join me in praying that this does not happen. Thank you.
