Peter Mayer | Live! Key West

Peter Mayer, the lead guitarist for Jimmy Buffett’s Coral Reefer band, returned to The Studios of Key West for a solo show on January 15, 2010. Mayer  performed original songs from a career that has produced more than 13 CDs and songs such as “Faith In Angels” (featured on an episode of the hit series “Scrubs”) and Blue Guitar (recorded and performed by Jimmy Buffett). He  also included a few selections from his latest release, Goodbye Hello, a collection of 15 Beatles songs outfitted with fresh arrangements and new musical settings.
Guitarist, vocalist and songwriter, Peter Mayer has been quietly and steadily creating a strong following throughout America, stepping outside his role as one of Jimmy Buffett's Coral Reefers to front his own band, The Peter Mayer Group. Melding a unique and eclectic writing style, a distinctive voice, and virtuoso musicianship, Peter and his band create compelling and accessible music that is electrifying in live performance.

Peter's life began in Tamilnadu, the far southern region of India, where his parents served as missionaries for 17 years before returning to their Missouri roots. Musical influences from that period of his life can be heard in his playing. Peter recalls, "I can remember Indian musicians giving Christmas concerts in my parents' house. Wildly playing drums and flutes, shakers and bells, they would go on for hours and hours." He went on to study formal theory and composition, and to teach jazz guitar as a faculty member of Webster University.

“His two shows in November sold out very quickly, and his extraordinary musicianship explained why,” said Eric Holowacz, director of The Studios of Key West. “Peter carefully crafts each song, whether inspired by a pop classic, a calypso melody, or a jazz riff. The result is impeccable, beautiful.”
Peter Mayer appears as part of The Studios of Key West’s Old Town New Folk music series, which invites some of the country’s great singer-songwriters to the intimate main hall of the Historic Armory. His January 15 appearance will be followed by the legendary John Gorka on February 12, Cheryl Wheeler on March 11, and the return of last year’s favorite, David Wilcox on April 9. The Historic Armory series concludes with local music-maker, Ben Harrison, on April 24.
