| MARCH 26 THROUGH APRIL 9, 2021… IN KEY WEST WITH LYNDA…. DEAR READERS….Last year during this time, our town was quiet as can be….. no cruise ships… no Spring Breakers…. hardly a plane flying overhead….no noise wafting from Duval St…. no people walking around…. no tourists…We stayed in our homes and ventured out rarely for essentials only. It seemed eerie at first, but, in retrospect, it wasn’t as difficult to live through as I thought it would be. It was like we all needed a break from activity…. it really wasn’t all that bad, was it? And now…. our streets are teeming with spring-breakers, tourists and revelers….. very few wearing masks or following the rules. We have learned a lot during this past year. We have adjusted to being homebodies. That was THEN… this is NOW! Our year of quarantine has been served…. and now we are looking to get out of our cages and ‘LIVE’ again!!!! How do we make this happen? Many of us have now received vaccinations. As we know, unless we get 80% of the population to vaccinate, we will have to maintain our vigilant behavior indefinitely. I cannot tell anyone what to do, but I can encourage everyone to please, for the sake of our getting back to normalcy, to prevent potential danger to ourselves and to others in the community, please highly consider getting vaccinated. Personally, getting vaccinated was one of the high lights of my life. It was an emotional experience for me. I felt that I was part of a miraculous event. Studies have shown, that each one will prevent 100% of severe disease… and even if you somehow possibly get the virus, you will most likely not have a serious case nor will you have to be hospitalized. That is SO worth getting vaccinated!!!! ALL three will prevent you from getting a serious case. Truly! THE ONLY WAY OUT OF OUR “STARTING TO LIVE A RELATIVELY NORMAL LIFE AGAIN” IS IF WE ALL GET VACCINATED! THIS IS OUR HOPE. Let us band together and make this happen!!!!! (Again… I am not the boss of anyone, but this is my opinion.) BOB!!!!…. Thanks to all who have been asking how Bob is doing after his hernia surgery… thankfully, he is doing well… and in fact, he will be having his second hernia taken care on April 7. FLORIDA VACCINES…..The good news is that more and more places are offering the vaccine in Monroe County, and Key West. Also, those 50 and up are now eligible to get the Vaccine!!!!! Google the Department of Health website in Key West to find out all the latest. I know people are getting vaccines from Publix, Winn Dixie, and other spots. My friend Steve Russ said that Veterans serviced by the KW VA Clinic can book a vaccination by calling 305-293-4863…. the Miami VA is 305-575-7000. There are many options and right now. I was elated to hear it is hoped that by the end of May all adults who seek the vaccine will be vaccinated. This is great news for sure!!!! Many people are so frustrated as they have called and left their names and numbers and no one is returning their calls. I feel this is WRONG!!!!!! Please respond and get ALL our people vaccinated!!!!! UPDATE ON CRUISE SHIPS…..FOR ALL THOSE INTERESTED….. PLEASE DON’T GIVE UP THE SHIP!!!!! Following the Monroe County Commission’s Unanimous Vote to support the referendums passed by Key West voters and an Endorsement from the Editorial Board of the Miami Herald, a coalition of 24 leading environmental organizations and Florida Key’s Property Owners’ Associations have published an open letter to Governor Ron DeSantis, calling on him to help stop legislation that would overturn the vote and force Key West to accept larger cruise ships. My concern is whose voice will the Governor listen to? The Citizens who made their voices heard loud and clear by voting for Safer, Cleaner, Smaller Ships…. or the persons who seem to have only their self-interests at heart. Will Home Rule prevail? We are praying that DeSantis will be able to evaluate fact from fiction…. that he will see what the people of Key West want and voted for…. and see there are but a few people who stand to gain from reversing the vote. RECENT NEWS….. I just read in Key West Weekly, that the bill that would undo Key West’s vote took another step forward Wednesday morning, when another state senate committee approved Senate Bill 426, known as the Port Preemption Bill Filed by Republican Sen. Jim Boyd of Bradenton, the bill also nullifies any local referendum or ballot initiative to change a city’s port operations. None of this is good news. I am praying that the letter mentioned above will be taken to heart and heard by Gov. DeSantis. In the meantime, stay tuned… and keep Sen. Ana Maria Rodriguez’s contact info available….. she let us down at the last meeting… she had filed an amendment that would have protected KW as a State Area of Critical Concern, but she withdrew it without even commenting on the well-documented lethal effects that large cruise ships have in the FLA Keys Marine Sanctuary. The new language eliminated Home Rule Control in only four of the state’s 15 seaports, and they are centering most of their animosity toward Key West… ignoring the voice of the people of Key West. Additional changes could take place. However, if the committees can all come to agreement, the bill would move closer to receiving a full vote in the Legislature, where it is expected to pass. I am thrilled that our Mayor and Commission voted for the people and to keep Home Rule as it is and has been for over 100 years. Arlo Haskell and the Team who have worked so hard on behalf of the resident voters of Key West continue to have my support and hopefully, yours too. I plead to those who have been fighting the voters in KW to stop their fight and support CLEANER, SAFER, SMALLER SHIPS and listen to the residents of Key West! We also lost the legendary JAMES ‘CHAPPY’ CHAPMAN who brought smiles to our town by riding his lit and decorated three wheeler nightly up and down Duval S. playing music to entertain and delight us all! And…. I just now found out that we lost a former Fantasy Fest King 2005, DOUG STRIPP last month…..So sad…May they all rest in peace…. and Please keep their loved ones in your thoughts and prayers. (Glad we are John’s friends)..The book is titled “The Johnny Train”…and it is filled with John’s many adventures since his childhood. Every memoir is like an episode on a sitcom! It was a lot of fun to go on the Johnny Train with John, for sure! It was also most enjoyable because we knew so many people John wrote about. He has managed to fit lots of wonderful times and moments in his lifetime… along with his partner in it all, his great wife, Kay! They really and truly are a special pair…. a Marriage Made in Heaven …. and we love their children Michael & his wife Megan and Julie Johnston and her husband Eric. Congrats John!!!!! They hate taking back seat in life and will do anything to prevent it! They are natural leaders, not followers.
