Has our world gone completely bonkers? At first I thought this must be a kind of April Fool’s Article as our Citizen is wont to do… but no… it is a bill actually introduced…… Maybe it is high time we actually DID SECEED from the United States and be the CONCH REPUBLIC at last!!!!
KEY WEST HAS A ZILLION THINGS HAPPENING… As you take in all the wonderful events happening during this festive season, bear in mind that the Pandemic is NOT over… the virus continues to spread…. so…I am just suggesting that you try extra hard to be vigilant. I am afraid we will be living with precautionary rules like masking, hand-washing, distancing, and awareness of where you are and whom you are with, etc. for a good long time. But we are Key West strong… and we will persevere and also manage to have a lot of fun while doing it!

CELEBRATION OF LIFE FOR CHARLES ‘CHARLIE’ ALLEN, ON DEC. 5, 2021….It is time to remember Charlie, whom we all knew, loved and miss so very much. The lovable and wonderful, Charlie Lee Allen who supported ALL the Arts in Key West, passed away this year….To honor him….Charlie’s Family invites you to a Celebration of his Rich, Full Life on Dec. 5….at the Key West Armory, 600 White St….. Social hour is 4-5 pm….Celebration Program is 5 to 5:30 pm….Tributes from 5:30-6 pm. There will be piano music by Frank Wood (Charlie ran the Box Office at Tennessee Williams for many years!) and Tom Thayer, artistic director at The Waterfront Playhouse which Charlie loved, and served as a past Board Member. CELEBRATION CONCERT FOR DANNY WEATHERS….Tickets will soon be on sale for a Celebration Concert for Danny Weathers on Feb. 27, 2022. Jeff Johnson and Hy Conrad are producing this sure to be wonderful show to honor Danny. It will be held at the Tennessee Williams Theatre and will star Danny’s many sensational friends and entertainers. BLAKE BARKLAGE….. The tragic passing of June Hudson’s amazing grandson, Blake has broken all of our hearts. An all-around great student and young man, he had just finished keeping the stats for the soccer team at his high school when he died of a heart-attack. A TRIBUTE TO KEN PESKETT…. We met Ken when we frequented Cafe Med (now, Azur). He was a waiter, and as you are wont to do in Key West, you fall in love with certain restaurants and particular waiters. Ken was one of our faves…..as a former ballet dancer, he had a sense of style and grace. After Cafe Med he was at Louie’s Backyard for many years….Always creative he also became an expert potter and did beautiful work. We have several of his pieces and are glad as he ended his love affair with pottery and sold everything, kiln and all. About four years ago Bob and I did a lengthy tour of Italy…. a fabulous trip. The evening we arrived in Florence Italy, we were in a busy area searching for a particular restaurant that had gotten raves. As Bob was perusing his map I was craning my neck to see if I could spot the Cafe. In the throng of people passing, I saw a familiar person gliding by. I called out…”Hey! Is that Ken Peskett over there?” Time stood still, as Ken stopped in his tracks…. our eyes met, and we started to laugh at the ‘What are the Odds’ incredulity of it all! Ken said he had told no one he would be in Italy and there we all were! Needless to say, it was a magic moment and we three enjoyed a marvelous dinner and evening together. And then at the start of Covid, I heard he had left Key West… not back to Canada where he was born, but to Portland OR. I felt bad that we didn’t have a chance to bid adieu… but I hoped we would not lose contact. The other night we were at the fabulous Gardens Hotel for Jazz and it was wonderful to see so many friends we hadn’t seen in a long while, due to Covid. As I was chatting with Kenny Weschler, Ken’s name came up, and Kenny told me that he had heard that Ken Peskett had died. I was shocked to hear this and felt deeply saddened. I tried to find out if this info was true, and contacted a few friends who knew Ken and they each told me that yes, Ken had indeed passed away. I also found out that he left Portland to escape the fires that were roaring through Oregon and returned to visit a friend, Patty Flowers, in St.. Petersburg. FL. He lived there for 8 months until he passed away on June 30. If you knew Ken please take time to remember him and the lovely and elegant man he was.

NEW SERIES TO BE FILMED IN THE KEYS…..This series is set to film in 2022 and is based on the 2013 novel, BAD MONKEY, by Carl Hiaasen. I mention this mainly because the exec producer and star will be VINCE VAUGHN, who graduated from Lake Forest High School with our daughter, Melissa. He was a real talent back then…. and I once told him, “Vince… you are going to be a big star someday! Someday we will see your name in lights!” Then in Melissa’s yearbook, he wrote… “So great getting to know you, Melissa. I love your Mother!” Cute!!!
