She was 92….In her card to us last year, she wrote how much that mention in the Gazette, meant to her and how I touched her heart.  An old friend of hers sent me a note informing me that she had passed.  I also found out that another dear friend of many years, Jan Nanna Cernan, has Alzheimer’s and is in a Facility. She was the wife of the late astronaut, Eugene Cernan, who passed away in 2017.  I give thanks for the friendship I shared with these two wonderful women all these many years.  And again…I want to especially thank my dear husband Bob who is truly my ‘knight in shining armor’…

                                           ***  THE  FRECHETTE GAZETTE….DECEMBER, 2017 ***

IN KEY WEST  FOR CHRISTMAS THIS YEAR!                                                                             After trying, and failing to enjoy a ‘Norman Rockwell Christmas’ in Ohio last year, we have decided to remain in Key West  in 2017!   I made the fatal mistake of idealizing how I wanted everything to be and, when you do that, you set yourself up to be disappointed, and we were.  And yet, there were some magic moments… like opening up and decorating Rose Cottage, sitting cozily by the fire, visits to The Oaks, The Village Inn, & Pine Tree Barn…and thanks to nieces Sally and Jennifer Stevens and their husbands, Robert and Peter, we were made to feel loved and special indeed…they were true Christmas Angels!  So, this year we will be celebrating here with our KW Family.  It always amazes me how residents of the Keys go all out decorating for the holidays.  I am at the top of the list of over-the-top  decorators!  We have 5 trees decorated….two Villages set up….tables laden with Santas, Angels, Snowmen,  and countless antique Christmas items that we have been collecting for years.  It is a lot of work…and it is getting harder to do it every year….but as long as we can we will.  Thank God for Bob who carries down ‘zillions’ of   boxes filled with treasures from the attic, who does all the lights on the trees….and who enjoys it just as much as I do!!!

OUR LIFE AND TIMES IN KEY WEST                                                                                     We continue to be plagued with ATMA Disease….Afraid to Miss Anything…so we are out quite a bit, seeing just about every show on every stage in town.  Life is short, and while we can, we will try to enjoy every single moment!                                                                               Bob and I are heavily involved in our community here.  We are both on the board of the Waterfront Playhouse.  In addition, Bob is Treasurer of the Truman Annex Association where we reside. Bob still sells real estate in town, with Compass-Keller Williams Realty (and he would be glad to be of assistance to you if need be.  Call him at 305-304-2584 or email him at rfrechette@bellsouth.net.)  I still do my weekly newsletter informing nearly 2,000 people what is happening around town.  Check out my website with www.conchtv.com.  I also coordinate the 11 week Aqua Idol benefit for the Playhouse….last year it raised over $33,000 for the Playhouse. Note that my email is kwlynda@bellsouth.net.   And while we are on emails….both Bob and I were hacked this past June.  For me it was very traumatic, as all my 50 some groups that I had painstakingly organized thru the years, were gone!  It has taken me until now to reestablish my address book…and I am still not done.

                                                             * DEAR ROSE COTTAGE AT CHIPPEWA LAKE, OHIO*                                                               We are in Key West from mid October to mid June….Then, we close up our KW house,  load up the car, and head north to our dear Rose Cottage.  There we tend our darling cottage flower garden…spend time on our ‘Magic Porch’ and enjoy our Chippewa Lake Family of Friends!  It is a place filled with nostalgia and memories…small and charming, and in a way, like a miniature of our KW house….both over 100 years old….both homes filled with antiques and both places that make our hearts sing.  We are blessed to live in two homes that we dearly love! (For those interested, our address there is 62 Bungalow Bay Blvd., Chippewa Lake, Ohio 44215.)

THE WRATH OF IRMA!!!                                                                                               This year our serene life at Chippewa Lake was severely challenged when news that a killer hurricane, named Irma, was heading directly for Key West.  When we left KW in June, we had not secured our house, so on Sept. 5, Bob flew down to take care of the job.  By the time he ‘battened down the hatches’ it was too late for him to get out of town, so he, along with good friends, moved into a Category 5 building to ride out the storm.  When the storm arrived at about 8:30 am on Sept. 10,, KW lost all power and cell phone service.  All the news was gloom and doom.  They kept showing pictures of totally demolished structures, not even KW,  saying this is what happened to Key West.  I wasn’t able to talk with Bob and hear about this from him.  The TV crews were ushered out of the Keys quickly, as they needed them further north in Naples and Ft. Meyers.  After what seemed like an eternity with no contact from Bob I was getting desperate….I called various businesses and was able to make contact with George Fernandez at the Butterfly Conservatory.  He offered to go to our home to check on things, and leave a note for Bob.  He did give me some encouragement that Key West had dodged the bullet….that because Irma came at low tide, there was no storm surge to speak of….and because the eye did not go over KW, but some 25 miles north, we were spared the worst.  That was good news, but I needed to hear it from Bob.  I liken the experience to those old World War II movies, where the husband is overseas and the wife is left home, lonely and blue.  And then after all the angst and fear, the phone rings, and it is HIM…letting you know that he is fine, that he loves you and that all’s right with the world.  A great burden was lifted from my shoulders….I learned that our house was A-ok…..built in 1874 it has withstood many a hurricane….no structural damage whatsoever!  Key West had a lot of foliage and vegetation damage, and many ancient, venerable trees were destroyed….but we would be okay!  Not good news for those in the middle Keys.  Many homes were totaled and hundreds of people lost everything in Cudjoe, Big Pine, Little Torch, etc.  So,  Bob cleared out the debris in our yard….cleaned out the fridge and got a flight back to Ohio out of Miami on Sept. 15 and I was there to pick him up ‘from battle’.  We both learned a big lesson here.  We will never return to Chippewa Lake without securing our KW home!!  Bob also says he will never stay in town if there is a hurricane again….Oddly, most people who stayed said the same thing…never again!  Those who evacuated, say they will never leave again. They said that it was too frustrating  when they tried to return back to their homes in the Keys  after they left.

THE GROTTO AT THE BASILICA OF ST, MARY STAR OF THE SEA                                                                          In 1922, Sr.Louis Gabriel, who had survived 3 major hurricanes in KW,  had a replica of the Our Lady of Lourdes in France, built on the grounds of St. Mary’s Parish.  When the shrine was dedicated, Sr. Gabriel remarked that as long as the Grotto stood, “Key West would never experience the full brunt of a hurricane.”  When a hurricane is approaching, Key West residents stream to the Grotto to light candles and pray for safety.   This year, every single candle was lit.  After the storm came through and moved on, all those candles were still burning strong. The prayers at the Grotto worked their magic once again!  We can attest that there hasn’t been a devastating hurricane since ’22!

AN EASTER TIME MIRACLE….                                                                                                             Do you believe in miracles?  I do.  They happen every single day.  We had a BIG one in our family this past year.  Our son, Rob, who is a sales rep for a large heating and cooling company in Chicago, was on a job on Holy Thursday, April 13.  He set up a ladder to check on things….he got up to about 35 feet and a strong wind literally blew him off the ladder.  The next thing he recalls is that he was in a hospital… Alive!  He survived with no broken bones, no missing teeth….he incurred a concussion and a small gash on his head…How do you explain these things?  We could have lost our dear son, but he is fine!  He had dizzy spells and vision problems for a while, but they have subsided.  He is alright.  Truly, I feel the angels caught him when he fell, and carried him down and placed him gently on the ground.  I do believe in miracles. I do I do!!!

TRAVELS THIS SUMMER                                                                                                                     Our first trip was to see or children, Rob and Melissa, in the Chicago area.  We had a great visit with them in June.  We also visited dear friends, Keith & Red Dempster at their charming home in New Hampshire.  Having never been to ‘Moose Country’  it was quite a wonderful visit and Keith was the ultimate host.  After that, we headed for NYC to celebrate our Aug. 22 anniversary. We stayed, once again at the Iroquois Hotel on 44th St…saw some fabulous shows including ‘Groundhog Day’, ‘Come From Away’, ‘Dear Evan Hanson’, and “Hello Dolly ‘ with  the divine Bette Midler!!  We also got to see friends Bruce Moore, Pat West,  Chip Allen, George Sanders, Shawn Curran, Paul Smith, Stephanie Sander, and Jeff Johnson while there.  I must mention how great it was to see the Eclipse in Bryant Park in NYC!  Also, we had a special visit with Marti & Bill Roberts in PA. This coming May, we look forward to our daughter, Melissa’s annual visit to KW for the Songwriter’s Festival!

NEPHEW JOEY STEVENS AND DINA BILLIMORIA GET  MARRIED!!!                                                    In Sept. we journeyed to Long Beach, CA with a good number of the Stevens clan, to attend the wedding of our dear nephew Joey Stevens  to the lovely Dina!  A full weekend of activities was planned and executed beautifully!  It was a wonderful memory for all who were there.  After the wedding, Bob and I headed to Palm Springs, CA and stayed at the Sparrow Inn….first class accommodations and a wonderful time shared in this unique and beautiful part of the world!  Also in Sept., had a great time at my annual high school reunion dinner!  What a great group!!!

HOLY TOELIO!!!!                                                                                                                    When Bob was in KW securing our house, I experienced a bout with, not Polio…. Toelio… a word coined by good friend, Paul Vereb.  Anyway, my right big toe nail oddly split vertically, from top to bottom.   I found out that I had an ingrown nail growing which cause the split.  I was soaking the toe daily.  Then, on Oct.19 I was carrying the pan of water back to the sink, a bit of water spilled on the floor.  As I walked back to join Bob on the sofa, I slipped on that bit of water and broke my left big toe in two places.  Now, both toes were compromised!  What are the odds of that happening?  After seeing a podiatrist, going through surgery on the right toe and wearing a boot  on my left foot, I am happy to say that I am all healed and before long I will be back on the tennis courts!!!  Now I can once again, “put my best feet forward!”  Yay!

IN MEMORIAM                                                                                                        This has been a year of tremendous loss of dear friends and family members.                                             THE CAPRICORN PERSONALITY…DEC. 22 TO JAN. 20

Capricorns are terrific company and are known for their wonderful sense of humor.  They are also the perfect person to turn to in time of any crisis.  Anyone who has enjoyed a good laugh with a Capricorn will want to come back for more.  One of a Cap’s greatest strengths is learning from experience.   They know how to turn a bad mistake into a valuable lesson.  And that is important, as it is a rare Capricorn who goes through life unscathed.  Most have their crosses to bear, but they usually grit their teeth and get on with it.  This endurance and sticking power stays with them through life.  Capricorns do have a tendency to be a tad pessimistic…seeing the glass half empty rather than half full.  They often have a feeling that something awful is just waiting to happen, and if their fear comes true, they can become quite depressed.  They are often fearful about the future and they need sympathetic listeners so they can unburden themselves.  Reputation is very important to Capricorns.  They want to be seen in a good light at all times by everyone.  They often dress quite formally, as though they would let themselves down if they wear anything too casual.  They tend to wear blacks and grays rather than bright colors.  Another Capricorn bonus is that they never seem to age.  Other signs will age, but the reverse seems to happen to a Capricorn.  In fact, they seem to get younger right before your eyes.  They mellow, learn to relax, and by the time of old age, they can make teenagers look positively boring!

In love, Caps always want to give a good impression and seem in control.  On the surface they may appear to be calm and collected but they aren’t nearly as emotionally unruffled as they seem.  Deep down they are extremely shy and vulnerable.  Their feelings are easily hurt, and they will distance themselves emotionally from people as a form of protection.  Caps are not noted for their demonstrative affections and they are very shy about expressing their feelings.  The thought of rejection is appalling to them.  Thus they shy away from scenes and close relationships, as they do not want to get hurt.  Though Caps can be quite solitary creatures, they benefit from being in a loving relationship.  Caps have a very traditional view of long-term relationships, believing that the man is the breadwinner and the woman should stay and take care of the house.  Nevertheless, despite all of these issues, they can be hot stuff in the boudoir.  The best signs for a Capricorn are Aries, Taurus, Cancer, and Capricorn!!!!

In career the Capricorn shines!  They strive to be taken seriously by the world and their job is a way to prove themselves..and they devote lots of time to it.  Life is often a struggle for a Cap until at least the 30th birthday….when things become easier and their careers begin to soar.  They are quite ambitious and harbor secret plans to go right to the top.  They are a valuable member of any work team…they can be relied on as they have a strong sense of duty….they may be chained to the desk long after everyone else has gone home….and they are often Workaholics!  Career paths they find appealing are big business, dentistry, medical field, civil service, and government work.  Even though it may be lonely at the top, they will manage beautifully.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO OUR SPECIAL CAPRICORN FRIENDS AND FAMILY MEMBERS!!!
