WE SAY GOODBYE! It is always sad to know of people we love in Key West who are leaving for other places and adventures! Just recently found out that Karen and John Hammond have left Key West and have moved to California. They are a wonderful and charming couple and will be deeply missed. Also, Jean Zeman just departed Key West for The Villages, FL… Hoping they will all have a wonderful new life in their new environment, and may they visit Key West time and time again!
SUCH SADNESS!!… Key West has this reputation for being such a fun-loving town… When I first started coming here in 1985 I found it to be a healing place. If I was down in the dumps, a visit to Key West would definitely heal my aching heart and when I would return back to our up-North home, I found it easier to cope. Yet with all the joy and happiness that Key West represents, there is also the reality of sadness lurking behind the laughter. I really felt as if the rug was pulled out from under me on Sunday, Nov. 10, when within a few minutes I found out about the passing of two persons I truly cared about. I was entering Fausto’s when I ran into a friend who looked at me sadly and conveyed her sorrow about my losing a friend. Not knowing what she was referring to, I nearly fell to the ground when she said, “Oh Lynda, I assumed you knew that Bill Welch died on Nov. 8.” Bill Welch has been a very dear and special friend for many years… a wonderful man… kind, giving, thoughtful, handsome, and a superb artist….as good a man as I have ever known. I knew he had been battling cancer for a while, but he was always so upbeat, positive, and optimistic. When he last visited Key West he was doing so well, and he looked like a million bucks…. He was happy and joyful to be back in Key West surrounded by his many friends. Yet, things obviously were not going well of late. His illness was once again rearing its ugly head… and to make things worse, he got pneumonia. The ambulance was transferring him from one hospital to another…. And en route, he suffered a heart attack and died. It is all so sad!!!…(Back to the story..) Weak in the knees, I entered the store, and was in the check out line… mind you, visibly upset…. And the fellow in front of me, whom I knew, asked me what was wrong. I said, I am just in shock having heard that Bill had died…. And then he said, ‘And isn’t it awful about the death of Barbara Hoffmen.” I did NOT know about Barbara, whom we always called ‘Barbara Please’ as she was the Queen of the Crystal Room who seated attendees of at the Crystal Room Shows at Lateda…. We would always call to her, ‘Barbara PLEASE find us a great table!’ She moved away several years ago but we continued to keep in touch and loved reading my blog. She was a unique and special gal. So folks…. Two more Key West Friends have departed and their memory will forever linger on in our hearts. (Let me know if you want addresses to send messages of sympathy to next of kin.)
ROCK SOLOMON’S FATHER PASSES AWAY… Local jazz singer and actor, and my friend, Rock Solomon, lost his beloved father, Ronnie Pierce, Seattle Jazz Legend… on Oct. 28, 2018. You can send Rock messages of condolence at:

JIM HALL…SICK BAY….. Very dear friend, JIM HALL, recently endured an Ischemic stroke at his home in Virginia Beach. He is convalescing in the hospital and going through some therapy… and we are all behind him 150% and are hoping he will be all well and good as new before long. *******PLEASE BECOME A MEMBER OF THE WATERFRONT PLAYHOUSE!!! Before long ‘the 2018-19 Season’ in KW will begin again. As a proud Board Member of the Waterfront Playhouse for 13 years, I am hoping that you will take the time to read the following. Our beloved Waterfront Playhouse had some major setbacks and challenges this past year. Hurricane Irma had a huge negative impact on the tourist populations coming to KW and dollars spent at the Theater. Major funding and grant challenges that we had counted on for years, were not there last season. But we persevered and presented yet another excellent Theater Season. In addition, we were confronted with the retirement of our wonderful artistic director of 17 years, Danny Weathers. The good news was that our new artistic director, Tom Thayer, was already employed by The WP as Business & Box Office Mgr. As fate would have it, Tom had run a Theater in Tennessee for 33 years, and he was able to seamlessly move into the AD spot. Of course that meant we needed a new Business Mgr., Box office Mgr…. and a Marketing Director. Then we lost our House Mgr. who also retired. At first it was a tad overwhelming, but we were able find quality people to assume each of those positions. Behind the scenes, we lost several key board members.. but after a search we have 9 fabulous new Board Members and we are thrilled! As you can see, we are on the threshold of new exciting beginnings. In spite of any past challenges, we all know that THE SHOW MUST GO ON!!! Theaters aren’t able to rely on Ticket Sales alone to keep them going…that is only a tiny part of it. In order to continue to present the kind of quality theater you have come to expect from us, we need YOU to help! How can I help? you ask….If you are already a MEMBER of the Waterfront Playhouse Family, I ask that you consider deepening your commitment financially by becoming a member at a higher level than you had before. Each level provides special perks and privileges…. BUT, the important thing is to look at it as not so much as ‘what you can get out of your membership’ but what you are giving and doing to provide Key West with the BEST Theater experience possible! I am starting this by saying that some of my best friends are Scorpios….as well as my very best friend, my dear husband Bob! They are an amazing group….terrific company and possess a fantastic sense of humor.
