AUGUST 31, THRU SEPTEMBER 6 (ETC.), 2018 IN KEY WEST WITH LYNDA!!!

DEAR READERS…..We just spent a most wonderful time in New York City!!!  We, historically, go there every year to celebrate our wedding anniversary, which is Aug. 22.  We saw four incredibly wonderful shows….three along with our good friends, Bobby Nesbitt and Michael Mulligan…. Carousel…. The Band’s Visit …. My Fair Lady… and we also saw The Play That Goes Wrong!  Each was sensational in their own ways. When we saw Carousel on 8/21, we didn’t think we could see any better… the dancing, the music… awesome!… and then on our anniversary we saw The Band’s Visit (matinee) which won just about every major Tony this past year…. And I was blown away!  I was moved to tears throughout the show, and loved every second of this unique musical!  …We were meeting Bobby & Mike to see My Fair Lady that evening at Lincoln Center.  Prior, to the show, Bob and I stopped at P.J. Clarke’s for a bite to eat.  As we sat there…..I about fell out of my chair, when in walks our great friend, Bruce Moore, who popped in to surprise us!  I should say, to surprise Me, as he had worked it all out with Bob earlier in the week….What a terrific surprise!!!!!  We all went to see My Fair Lady that evening and it was exquisite in every single way…. Scenery, costumes, acting, dancing… and what wonderful music!!!!!  Afterward we all went to Café Fiorello for an after theater/anniversary gathering of 5 special long-time friends!!!!  It was an unforgettable evening and a treasured memory.  We also enjoyed The Play That Goes Wrong which was zany and hysterical and non-stop laughing!  On Aug. 23, we went to 54 Below to see Michael Feinstein perform with Christine Ebersole….marvelous! In addition to enjoying our great time spent with Bobby, Mike and Bruce….we also got to see some other very dear friends while we were in NYC….Kristin LoGerfo and Peter Glicklich at their smashing apt….George Sanders & Shawn Curran before the 54 Below show…AND Paul Smith After 54 Below….and…. Fred Greenberg and June Hudson at Joe Allen’s restaurant….We had hoped to see others  of our many NYC friends, but time ran out, I’m afraid!  To add to the glory of this NY trip, the weather was spectacular…. Sunny and in the 70’s and no humidity! We are now back at Rose Cottage, but the grand memories linger on!!!! 

*******PLEASE BECOME A MEMBER OF THE WATERFRONT PLAYHOUSE!!!  Before long ‘the 2018-19 Season’ in KW will begin again.  As a proud Board Member of the Waterfront Playhouse for 13 years, I am hoping that you will take the time to read the following.   Our beloved Waterfront Playhouse had some major setbacks and challenges this past year.  Hurricane Irma had a huge negative impact on the tourist populations coming to KW and dollars spent at the Theater.   Major funding and grant challenges that we had counted on for years, were not there last season.  But we persevered and presented yet another excellent Theater Season. In addition, we were confronted with the retirement of our wonderful artistic director of 17 years, Danny Weathers.  The good news was that our new artistic director, Tom Thayer, was already employed by The WP as Business & Box Office Mgr.  As fate would have it, Tom had run a Theater in Tennessee for 33 years,  and he was able to seamlessly move into the AD spot. Of course that meant we needed a new Business Mgr., Box office Mgr…. and a Marketing Director.  Then we lost our House Mgr. who also retired.  At first it was a tad overwhelming, but we were able find quality people to assume each of those positions.  Behind the scenes, we lost several key board members.. but after a search we have 9 fabulous new Board Members and we are thrilled!  As you can see, we are on the threshold of new exciting beginnings.  In spite of any past challenges, we all know that THE SHOW MUST GO ON!!!  Theaters aren’t able to rely on Ticket Sales alone to keep them going…that is only a tiny part of it.  In order to continue to present the kind of quality theater you have come to expect from us, we need YOU to help!  How can I help? you ask….If you are already a MEMBER of the Waterfront Playhouse Family, I ask that you consider deepening your commitment financially by becoming a member at a higher level than you had before.  Each level provides special perks and privileges….  BUT, the important thing is to look at it as not so much as ‘what you can get out of your membership’ but what you are giving and doing to provide Key West with the BEST Theater experience possible!  If you have Never been a Member of the Waterfront Playhouse before…. CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL VOTERS!!!  I commend all who went out to vote on August 28!  I also congratulate all candidates who worked hard to conduct their campaigns.  I was not shy in supporting TERI JOHNSTON for Mayor…. And she did received 49% of the vote….and the VERY largest Absentee Ballot votes (thank you)…. Margaret Romero received 22% of the vote…. And my understanding is that since Teri did not receive 50% of the vote plus 1, there will be a run-off between Teri and Margaret on Nov. 6.  The fact is, that a woman WILL be Key West’s next Mayor! 

CONGRATS TO MARY LOU HOOVER!….. Another candidate I supported, was Mary Lou Hoover and she won 65% of the vote in District V and will serve as their Commissioner!

CONGRATS TO TIMOTHY GREENBERG!!!!  Son of Fred Greenberg and his late wife, Linda, we are thrilled to hear that Netflix has ordered eight episodes of Tim Greenberg’s new comedy series, ‘Living with Yourself’ starring popular actor, Paul Rudd.  Tim created this comedy series and is exec producer…he is an Emmy and Peabody award winner for the Daily Show with Jon Stewart.  This is exciting stuff! 

KEY WEST ART & HISTORICAL SOCIETY EXHIBIT……. New exhibit celebrates 75 years of electric power in the Lower Fla Keys….in the Bumpus Gallery at the Custom House at 281 Front St.  This exhibit will run through Nov. 26.

KICKOFF FOR TROPIC CINEMA KW 72 HOUR FILM CHALLENGE…. SEPT.6….5:30 at 416 Eaton St…Calling all filmmakers,directors, writers and actors…what kind of film can you make in just 72 hours?  FREE to enter… all ages and talent levels…. From amateur to pro…. A short lesson will be offered on how to film from your iPhone.  Film Teams will have 72 hours to write, shoot, edit, and score a complete short film that is seven minutes or less in length.  Films will need to be dropped off at Tropic Cinema or emailed in the correct format.  ALL entries will be shown at a screening open to the public on Sept. 25 and 26 at the Tropic.  During the Kick-off, teams will register. If you need to hook up with a team, let them know ahead of time and they will help you find others who you can work with.  Each team will be given a genre, title, line of dialogue, occupation and prop.  ALL elements must be included in your final film.  The rest is up to you!

 Virgos are perfectionists!  They like to do things properly and are furious with themselves if they think they have turned in a second rate job.  They will fiddle with something endlessly, trying to improve on what they have already done very well.  They worry about tiny details ….may even wake in the middle of the night thinking of what they may have forgotten to do…and of course they have a hard time falling back to sleep!  But when you want something done, who do you turn to?  The Virgo, every time!!  Virgos take a very practical approach to life, making them methodical, efficient, and sensible.  They are a tower of strength in a crisis. People rely on them but they also take them for granted.

Virgo’s are famous for their modesty….they have so many positives about them, but they seem to see only their shortcomings.  The Virgo sees minor faults as major flaws.    They are always wondering ‘why can’t I be tidier…neater…more organized?’….Virgos have very high standards, and they apply these rigorously, sometimes seeming harsh and unsympathetic.
